Advances in Diagnostics and Management of Adrenal Tumors
Adrenal tumors are commonly encountered in the practice of radiology (adrenal incidentalomas). They may arise from the adrenal gland itself, either the cortex or the medulla, or they could be secondary lesions, and they may be benign or malignant. When an adrenal tumor is identified, the key clinical questions are whether it is functioning and whether it is malignant. It is vital to be familiar with imaging characteristics of adrenal tumors for appropriate diagnosis and management. Regarding functionality, although 75% of adrenal tumors are non-functioning cortical adenomas, there is a subset of these masses with important clinical consequences (i.e. primary adrenal cancer or metastases to adrenal glands, pheochromocytoma and functional tumors that secrete cortisol, aldosterone or androgens). The delayed or false diagnosis may lead to development of severe complications of excess of secreted hormones (e.g. resistant hypertension, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis in case of hypercortisolaemia, hypertensive crisis or myocardial infarction in case of pheochromocytoma) or metastases (in case of primary adrenal cancer of malignant pheochromocytoma).
Lavinia Fontana’s Mythological Paintings
This volume investigates emblematic and art-historical issues in Lavinia Fontana’s mythological paintings. Fontana is the first female painter of the sixteenth century in Italy to depict female nudes, as well as mythological and emblematic paintings associated with concepts of beauty and wisdom. Her paintings reveal an appropriation of the antique, a fusion between patronage and culture, and a humanistic pursuit of Mannerist conceits. Fontana’s secular imagery provides a challenging paragone with the male tradition of history painting during the sixteenth century and paves the way for new subjects to be depicted and interpreted by female painters of the seventeenth century.
Doing Business 2011
Eighth in a series of annual reports comparing business regulations in 183 economies, Doing Business 2011 measures regulations affecting 10 areas of everyday business activity: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, employing workers, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts, and closing a business. Sofonisba's Lesson
