Clan McAndrew
History and genealogy of the McAndrew family. Descendants of Joseph McAndrew (1777-1858), who was born in Virginia to William McAndrew and Janette Ingales originally from Scotland. He married Susannah Lucretta Gregory (abt. 1780-1840) in 1798. They lived in Bradley Co., Tennessee. Descendants live in Tennessee, Texas, Michigan and elsewhere.

"This volume, a collection of letters written by an abolitionist businessman who lived in East Tennessee prior to the Civil War, provides one of the clearest firsthand views yet published of a region whose political, social, and economic distinctions have intrigued historians for more than a century." "Between 1841 and 1846, Birdseye expressed his views and observations in letters to Gerrit Smith, a prominent New York reformer who arranged to have many of them published in antislavery newspapers such as the Emancipator and Friend of Man." "Those letters, reproduced in this book, drew on Birdseye's extensive conversations with slaveholders, nonslaveholders, and the slaves themselves. He found that East Tennesseans, on the whole, were antislavery in sentiment, susceptible to rational abolitionist appeal, and generally far more lenient toward individual slaves than were other southerners. Opposed to slavery on economic as well as moral grounds, Birdseye sought to establish a free labor colony in East Tennessee in the early 1840s and actively supported the region's abortive effort in 1842 to separate itself from the rest of the state."--[book jacket].

Troubled Waters
Since 1908, the corporate giant now known as Champion International has operated a pulp and paper mill along the banks of the Pigeon River in Canton, North Carolina. As a result, during most of those years, this once-sparkling Appalachian stream has been virtually useless except as an industrial sewer - foamy, foul-smelling, molasses-colored. By polluting the river, the mill that brought prosperity to Canton stunted the economic growth of the downstream communities in Cocke County, Tennessee. Although public pressure to clean up the Pigeon surfaced intermittently, it has been only in the years since 1985 that two organizations - the Pigeon River Action Group and the Dead Pigeon River Council - have mounted a sustained drive against the ongoing pollution. Today, following a multimillion-dollar upgrading of the Champion mill, the Pigeon River is cleaner but hardly pristine. Moreover, there is little evidence that Champion carried out its modernization for any reasons other than economic ones.

Volume 5 of 8, pages 2627 to 3336. A genealogical compilation of the descendants of John Jacob Rector and his wife, Anna Elizabeth Fischbach. Married in 1711 in Trupbach, Germany, the couple immigrated to the Germanna Colony in Virginia in 1714. Eight volumes document the lives of over 45,000 individuals.

Descendants of William Bibee (ca. 1780 or 1790-1834), who was born in Virginia, and died in Cocke Co., Tennessee. He was married to Peggy O'Neil (ca. 1780-1840). She was the daughter of Henry O'Neil and Betsy Gillett. Their six children were all born in Cocke Co., Tn. Descendants live in Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia, Iowa, Illinois, California, Oklahoma, Oregon, Kentucky, Kansas, Utah and elsewhere.
