Reel Vulnerability

Wonder women, G.I. Janes, and vampire slayers increasingly populate the American cultural landscape. What do these figures mean in the American cultural imagination? What can they tell us about the female body in action or in pain? Reel Vulnerability explores the way American popular culture thinks about vulnerability, arguing that our culture and our scholarship remain stubbornly invested in the myth of the helplessness of the female body. The book examines the shifting constructions of vulnerability in the wake of the cultural upheavals of World War II, the Cold War, and 9/11, placing defenseless male bodies onscreen alongside representations of the female body in the military, in the inte...

As the magazine of the Texas Exes, The Alcalde has united alumni and friends of The University of Texas at Austin for nearly 100 years. The Alcalde serves as an intellectual crossroads where UT's luminaries - artists, engineers, executives, musicians, attorneys, journalists, lawmakers, and professors among them - meet bimonthly to exchange ideas. Its pages also offer a place for Texas Exes to swap stories and share memories of Austin and their alma mater. The magazine's unique name is Spanish for "mayor" or "chief magistrate"; the nickname of the governor who signed UT into existence was "The Old Alcalde."

A philosopher argues that we know little about our own inner lives. Do you dream in color? If you answer Yes, how can you be sure? Before you recount your vivid memory of a dream featuring all the colors of the rainbow, consider that in the 1950s researchers found that most people reported dreaming in black and white. In the 1960s, when most movies were in color and more people had color television sets, the vast majority of reported dreams contained color. The most likely explanation for this, according to the philosopher Eric Schwitzgebel, is not that exposure to black-and-white media made people misremember their dreams. It is that we simply don't know whether or not we dream in color. In Perplexities of Consciousness, Schwitzgebel examines various aspects of inner life (dreams, mental imagery, emotions, and other subjective phenomena) and argues that we know very little about our stream of conscious experience. Drawing broadly from historical and recent philosophy and psychology to examine such topics as visual perspective, and the unreliability of introspection, Schwitzgebel finds us singularly inept in our judgments about conscious experience.

Cooper's Cougar (The Bad Boys of Hockey Romance Trilogy, Book 3)

The thrilling conclusion to the Bad Boys of Hockey Trilogy! Charlie Cooper is the perfect package of sex appeal and silly goofball. Even better, he’s about to meet his match with the one woman who can see his true self behind all the humor… For Coop, filling the role of class clown always came easy. Making people laugh was second nature—growing up with four older sisters, a guy did what he had to do in order to get noticed—and he enjoyed putting smiles on his teammates’ faces. In the world of professional hockey, some guys filled the role of enforcer, some guys scored goals, and others, like Coop, provided the comic relief. Coop isn’t laughing when he meets the sexy new resident of Harlequin Hills. In fact, he’s a little smitten and a lot attracted to the smoldering carefree widow who has hair like a mermaid and curves like a goddess. And it’s here, in the arms of the most fascinating woman he’s ever met, that Coop will finally have a chance to prove that cracking jokes isn’t the only thing he’s good at…
