The monograph In the Shadow of Totalitarianism Sport and the Olympic Movement in the "Visegrád Countries" 1945–1989 is devoted to the history of sport in selected countries of Central Europe from the end of World War II until the end of the 80s, i. e. communist regimes downfall. The development of sport and the Olympic Movement in Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary are observed in mutual interaction with ideologically homogenous and totalitarian systems whose metamorphoses of power were different within the chronological development in the above mentioned period of time.

Between Prometheism and Realpolitik
The Treaty of Riga of March 1921 did not signify real peace. It was soon followed by the outbreak of a Polish-Soviet cold war, which in the early 1920s threatened to reach a boiling point. One of the salient fronts on which it was fought was Ukraine and the Ukrainian question. The means by which it was waged – first by Poland, and subsequently, more successfully, by the Soviets – was by attempts to stir up centrifugal tendencies on enemy territory, leading eventually to the splitting up of the neighboring state along its national seams. Polish-Soviet rivalry over Ukraine had flared up at the Riga peace conference. In the following years both antagonists struggled to win over the sympathies of Ukrainians living on either side of the frontier River Zbrucz (Zbruch) and dispersed in various émigré centers, and the weapons employed were propaganda, diplomacy, nationalities policy, economic projects, political subterfuge, and armed irredentism. Jan Jacek Bruski's book addresses the first, very important phase of this Polish-Soviet tussle.

Das global vernetzte Dorf
Rusiv, ein Dorf in der historischen Region Ostgalizien, gehört heute zur Ukraine. Im 20. Jahrhundert wechselte es mehrmals die staatliche Zugehörigkeit. Über die Jahrzehnte wanderten viele Bewohner nach Kanada aus. Dichte Netzwerke zwischen den Ausgewanderten und den zu Hause Gebliebenen bestimmten das Leben des Dorfes - und waren sogar stark genug, den Eisernen Vorhang zu durchdringen. In der Gegenwart migrieren viele Bewohner nach Südeuropa, sodass bis heute von einem global vernetzten Dorf zu sprechen ist. Der Autor richtet den Blick auf eine Menschengruppe, die meist außen vor bleibt, die Dorfbewohner, und eröffnet so eine neue Sichtweise auf die Geschichte Osteuropas.
Laboratorium für internationale gesetzgeberische Arbeit
Polen stand nach dem Großen Krieg vor der Herausforderung der innerstaatlichen Rechtsvereinheitlichung über die Grenzen der europäischen Rechtskreise hinaus und der Integration in das System internationaler Rechtsnormen. Die Zweite Polnische Republik bot deshalb den Anblick eines Laboratoriums en miniature für internationale gesetzgeberische Arbeit, in welchem die Idee, eines neuen, modernen polnischen Rechts mit der lex lata fremder Rechtsordnungen verglichen werden konnte. Die Arbeit der polnischen Kodifikationskommission erfolgte in einem europäischen Umfeld, das vom Streben nach Rechtsvereinheitlichung gekennzeichnet war, und ist deshalb als Pionierunternehmen für eine europäische Rechtsvereinheitlichung über die Grenzen der in Kontinentaleuropa bestehenden Rechtskreise hinaus anzusehen.
