Approximation Theory Viii - Volume 1: Approximation And Interpolation

This is the collection of the refereed and edited papers presented at the 8th Texas International Conference on Approximation Theory. It is interdisciplinary in nature and consists of two volumes. The central theme of Vol. I is the core of approximation theory. It includes such important areas as qualitative approximations, interpolation theory, rational approximations, radial-basis functions, and splines. The second volume focuses on topics related to wavelet analysis, including multiresolution and multi-level approximation, subdivision schemes in CAGD, and applications.

Generalized Mathieu Series

Generalized Mathieu Series

The Mathieu series is a functional series introduced by Émile Léonard Mathieu for the purposes of his research on the elasticity of solid bodies. Bounds for this series are needed for solving biharmonic equations in a rectangular domain. In addition to Tomovski and his coauthors, Pogany, Cerone, H. M. Srivastava, J. Choi, etc. are some of the known authors who published results concerning the Mathieu series, its generalizations and their alternating variants. Applications of these results are given in classical, harmonic and numerical analysis, analytical number theory, special functions, mathematical physics, probability, quantum field theory, quantum physics, etc. Integral representations, analytical inequalities, asymptotic expansions and behaviors of some classes of Mathieu series are presented in this book. A systematic study of probability density functions and probability distributions associated with the Mathieu series, its generalizations and Planck’s distribution is also presented. The book is addressed at graduate and PhD students and researchers in mathematics and physics who are interested in special functions, inequalities and probability distributions.

Applied Mathematics Reviews, Volume 1

Applied mathematics connects the mathematical theory to the reality by solving real world problems and shows the power of the science of mathematics, greatly improving our lives. Therefore it plays a very active and central role in the scientific world. This volume contains 14 high quality survey articles — incorporating original results and describing the main research activities of contemporary applied mathematics — written by top people in the field. The articles have been written in review style, so that the researcher can have a quick and thorough view of what is happening in the main subfields of applied mathematics.

Exact Constants in Approximation Theory

Exact Constants in Approximation Theory

This book is intended as a self-contained introduction for non-specialists, or as a reference work for experts, to the particular area of approximation theory that is concerned with exact constants. The results apply mainly to extremal problems in approximation theory, which in turn are closely related to numerical analysis and optimization. The book encompasses a wide range of questions and problems: best approximation by polynomials and splines; linear approximation methods, such as spline-approximation; optimal reconstruction of functions and linear functionals. Many of the results are based on deep facts from analysis and function theory, such as duality theory and comparison theorems; t...

Fourier Series In Orthogonal Polynomials

This book presents a systematic course on general orthogonal polynomials and Fourier series in orthogonal polynomials. It consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 deals in essence with standard results from the university course on the function theory of a real variable and on functional analysis. Chapter 2 contains the classical results about the orthogonal polynomials (some properties, classical Jacobi polynomials and the criteria of boundedness). The main subject of the book is Fourier series in general orthogonal polynomials. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to some results in this topic (classical results about convergence and summability of Fourier series in L2μ; summability almost everywhere b...

Martingale Hardy Spaces and Summability of One-Dimensional Vilenkin-Fourier Series

This book discusses, develops and applies the theory of Vilenkin-Fourier series connected to modern harmonic analysis. The classical theory of Fourier series deals with decomposition of a function into sinusoidal waves. Unlike these continuous waves the Vilenkin (Walsh) functions are rectangular waves. Such waves have already been used frequently in the theory of signal transmission, multiplexing, filtering, image enhancement, code theory, digital signal processing and pattern recognition. The development of the theory of Vilenkin-Fourier series has been strongly influenced by the classical theory of trigonometric series. Because of this it is inevitable to compare results of Vilenkin-Fourie...
