For many, the middle ages depicted in Walt Disney movies have come to figure as the middle ages, forming the earliest visions of the medieval past for much of the contemporary Western (and increasingly Eastern) imagination. The essayists of The Disney Middle Ages explore Disney's mediation and re-creation of a fairy-tale and fantasy past, not to lament its exploitation of the middle ages for corporate ends, but to examine how and why these medieval visions prove so readily adaptable to themed entertainments many centuries after their creation. What results is a scrupulous and comprehensive examination of the intersection between the products of the Disney Corporation and popular culture's fascination with the middle ages.

Social Aesthetics and the School Environment

This book theorizes aesthetic classroom management through a hermeneutical approach with three fields of literature: history and philosophical foundations of chivalry, chivalry’s promulgation through the Victorian Age, and parallel issues of identity in twenty-first century teacher education. The aim of the book is to examine the relationship between chivalric ethos and education. The presented case study addresses more specifically the following question: how can chivalry be re-imagined or theorized in an educational setting? Few studies address the concept of aesthetics and hermeneutical context in American classroom management and classroom life, and Attwood pinpoints and traces the medieval social concept of chivalry through the centuries and argues it has manifested itself in classroom social construction in the twenty-first century.

Künker Auction 362: The Origins of the German Coin Trade: Brochure on the Fate of the Hamburger and Schlessinger Families

On the occasion of the sale of the Salton Collection, auction house Künker and Stack’s Bowers Galleries entrusted the historian Ursula Kampmann with the task of investigating the history of the Hamburger-Schlessinger dynasty of coin dealers. Her findings revolutionize what we know about the German coin trade. On 22 March 2022, the second part of the Lottie and Mark Salton Collection will be auctioned off by auction house Künker in Osnabrück. It contains spectacular coins that are all the more spectacular due to one fact: before he emigrated to the United States of America in 1946, Mark Salton bore the name Max Schlessinger. He was the son of Felix Schlessinger, who ran one of the most f...

Equitable Adult Learning

This book provides case studies written by practitioners from four organizations serving diverse adult learners in equitable, inclusive, and just ways. Their work employs an adapted version of the Education Deans for Justice and Equity Framework for Assessment and Transformation, a comprehensive tool grounded in research on equity and justice. This is one of the first published uses of that framework. The editors situate this book in the history and need for increased equity and justice in adult education. They apply participatory action research to assist the four organizations in telling their stories. Authors of the organization chapters highlight their history and context in relation to their organizational structures, systems, policies, and procedures. Editors provide a cross-case analysis of the four case studies. This book will appeal to academics in adult education, social justice education, qualitative research methods, and organizational development. Organizations and practitioners will find exemplars of how to live into their intentions to be equitable and just.
