Sylvain Chomet’s Distinctive Animation

Sylvain Chomet’s Distinctive Animation

Sylvain Chomet is a multifaceted French artist best known for his feature animation films The Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist. Although the films have a highly recognized artistic value, the relevant literature is limited to a modest number of articles. This open access book provides the first in-depth analysis of his animation films and his contribution to contemporary animation. Sylvain Chomet's Distinctive Animation examines important elements of the artist's life, his studies and previous works, along with his influences and important collaborations. Special attention is also paid to the production processes, as well as the historical and socioeconomic context in which they have been created, in order to provide the reader not only with a comprehensive study of the films, but also to highlight their contribution to the advancement of contemporary animation. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on www.bloomsburycollections.com.

The Maize Handbook

The Maize Handbook represents the collective efforts of the maize research community to enumerate the key steps of standard procedures and to disseminate these protocols for the common good. Although the material in this volume is drawn from experience with maize, many of the procedures, protocols, and descriptions are applicable to other higher plants, particularly to other grasses. The power and resolution of experiments with maize depend on the wide range of specialized genetic techniques and marked stocks; these materials are available today as the culmination of nearly 100 years of genetic research. A major goal of this volume is to introduce this genetical legacy and to highlight curre...

A Physicist Remembers

A Physicist Remembers traces the effort to measure electron charge, spin, and momentum density on atoms and solids and to compare experiment with theory.Since the complexity of electron arrangements leads to subtle property changes in atoms, molecules and solids, theory and experiment have generally differed by about 1%. The Sagamore conferences have made inroads in reducing this difference. Since 1963 the triennial Sagamore conferences have been held in New York, France, Russia, Finland, Portugal, Germany, Canada, Japan, and England, attracting thousands of participants.Richard J Weiss, original organizer of these conferences, describes the evolution of the X-ray, neutron, and positron probes employed in these measurements. He has performed research with Francis Jenkins at the University of California at Berkeley, Simon Pasternack at Brookhaven National Laboratory, John Slater and B Warren at MIT, Peter Wohlfarth at Imperial College London, M Hart at King's College London, and Sir N Mott at Cavendish Laboratory.

The Measurement of Turbulent Fluctuations

Smol'yakov and Tkachenko's book is a very thorough and detailed survey of the response of hot wires and related trans ducers to a fluctuating flow field. Now that the electronic equipment needed for hot-wire anemometry is so easy to make or cheap to buy, transducer response is the most critical part of the subject - except for the fragility of the sensing element , for which textbooks are no remedy! We hope that this book will be useful to all students and research workers concerned with the theory or practice of these devices or the interpretation of results. Peter Bradshaw Imperial College London v Preface "The importance of experimental data and of experimentally established general prope...

DNA

1953 witnessed a breakthrough in biological science, the revelation of the double helical structure of DNA. Since the original revelation by James Watson and Francis Crick, knowledge of the structure and function of DNA has dramatically changed science and society. This volume explores the dramatic impact that this discovery has had on our lives. Beginning with the story of the discovery of the double helix, the collection looks at DNA fingerprinting and its impact on forensic and legal medicine; the extraction of ancient DNA from archaeological and palaeontological remains; the ethical implications arising from the genetic knowledge encoded in our DNA; the complex role of DNA in the cause, detection and treatment of cancer; the debates surrounding the potential commercialisation of genetically modified crops; the emotive field of reproductive medicine; and finally how the genetic basis of developmental language disorders is teaching us more about how humans communicate.

General Principles of Quantum Mechanics

I am very happy to accept the translators' invitation to write a few lines of introduction to this book. Of course, there is little need to explain the author. Pauli's first famous work, his article on the theory of relativity in the Encyklopädie der Mathematischen Wissenschaften was written at the age of twenty. He afterwards took part in the development of atomic physics from the still essentially classical picture of Bohr's early work to the true quantum mechanics. Thereafter, some of his work concerned the treatment of problems in the framework of the new theory, especially his paper on the hydrogen atom following the matrix method without recourse to Schrodinger's analytic form of the ...

Advanced Nondestructive Evaluation Ii

This volume comprises papers presented at the 2nd International Conference on Advanced Nondestructive Evaluation (ANDE 2007) held in Busan, Korea, on October 17-19, 2007. Many of the excellent papers included in this book show the current state of nondestructive technologies, which are experiencing rapid progress with the integration of emerging technologies in various fields. As such, this volume provides an avenue for both specialists and scholars to share their ideas and the results of their findings in the field of nondestructive evaluation.

The latest volume in the highly acclaimed series addresses atomic collisions, assessing the status of the current knowledge, identifying deficiencies, and exploring ways to improve the quality of cross-section data.Eleven articles, written by foremost experts, focus on cross-section determination by experiment or theory, on needs in selected applications, and on efforts toward the compilation and dissemination of data. This is the first volume edited under the additional direction of Herbert Walther. Presents absolute cross sections for atomic collisions Uses benchmark measurements and benchmark calculations Discusses needs for cross-section data in applications Contains a guide to data resources, bibliographies, and compendia
