Method and Metaphysics

This volume presents 26 essays on method and metaphysics in ancient philosophy by Jonathan Barnes, one of the most admired and influential philosophers of his generation. Several of the essays appear here in English for the first time; others are substantially revised. This will be a rich feast for students and scholars of ancient philosophy.

Augustine

Augustine: From Rhetor to Theologian arose from a conference held at Trinity College, Toronto, to celebrate the 1600th anniversary of the conversion to Catholic Christianity of Augustine of Hippo. Fifteen papers from international scholars make up this book. Augustine set his stamp on the Latin Church, yet only in the twentieth century, with its profound, even paradigmatic change did the descendants of that church -- Anglican, Reformed, and Roman Catholic -- recognize the degree to which their inbred attitudes and theological positions were "Augustinian." It is, however, another measure of the importance of Augustine that many aspects of his life and meanings of his writings are still disputed. This continuing investigation and debate is evidenced in this volume.

This is the first book-length study in English of the interpretative and philosophical approach of the commentaries of Simplicius of Cilicia (c. AD 530). Simplicius' work, marked by doctrinal complexity and scholarship, is unusually self-conscious, learned and rich in its sources, and he is therefore one of those rare authors who is of interest to ancient philosophers, historians and classicists alike. Here, Han Baltussen argues that our understanding of Simplicius' methodology will be greatly enhanced if we study how his scholarly approach impacts on his philosophical exegesis. His commentaries are placed in their intellectual context and several case studies shed light on his critical trea...

Neurocritical Care

Very few hospitals have dedicated neurointensive care units for management of critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients. Frequently, these patients are managed in the medical or surgical ICU by non-neurologists, who have a hard time appreciating the delicate needs of these patients. This book is a straightforward, practical reference for treating physicians who need to deal with a wide range of complex conditions and associated medical problems. Although comprehensive in scope, Dr Michel T. Torbey has designed this book for neurologists and physicians in the ICU who need a concise and thorough guide to management and treatment. It emphasizes practical state-of-the-art suggestions for management and treatment and provides accessible, easy-to-follow, highly structured, and focused protocols for the assessment, day-to-day management, and treatment of critically ill patients in various ICU divisions.

Having now benefited from viable editions and studies of many of the most important authors within the Neoplatonic tradition of western philosophy, it is time for us to read these materials more actively in terms of the philosophical developments of the late twentieth century that provide the greatest opportunities for intertextual exploration. The hermeneutical project that beckons was begun in Stephen Gersh's Neoplatonism after Derrida: Parallelograms (Brill, 2006) and is raised to a higher power in his present volume. Here a new course is charted in the reading of such ancient authors as Proclus, Damascius, Augustine, Pseudo-Dionysius, and Meister Eckhart through a critical engagement with the deconstructions of pagan and Christian Neoplatonic texts in the writings of Jacques Derrida.
