This volume is a tribute to Professor Dietrich von Rosen on the occasion of his 65th birthday. It contains a collection of twenty original papers. The contents of the papers evolve around multivariate analysis and random matrices with topics such as high-dimensional analysis, goodness-of-fit measures, variable selection and information criteria, inference of covariance structures, the Wishart distribution and growth curve models.
Diversity is characteristic of the information age and also of statistics. To date, the social sciences have contributed greatly to the development of handling data under the rubric of measurement, while the statistical sciences have made phenomenal advances in theory and algorithms. Measurement and Multivariate Analysis promotes an effective interplay between those two realms of research-diversity with unity. The union and the intersection of those two areas of interest are reflected in the papers in this book, drawn from an international conference in Banff, Canada, with participants from 15 countries. In recent years, technological breakthroughs have greatly enhanced our ability to understand the complex world of molecular biology. Rapid developments in genomic profiling techniques, such as high-throughput sequencing, have brought new opportunities and challenges to the fields of computational biology and bioinformatics. Furthermore, by combining genomic profiling techniques with other experimental techniques, many powerful approaches (e.g., RNA-Seq, Chips-Seq, single-cell assays, and Hi-C) have been developed in order to help explore complex biological systems. As a result of the increasing availability of genomic datasets, in terms of both volume and variety, the analysis of such data has become a critical challenge as well as a topic of great interest. Therefore, statistical methods that address the problems associated with these newly developed techniques are in high demand. This book includes a number of studies that highlight the state-of-the-art statistical methods for the analysis of genomic data and explore future directions for improvement.
This volume presents a selection of articles on statistical modeling and simulation, with a focus on different aspects of statistical estimation and testing problems, the design of experiments, reliability and queueing theory, inventory analysis, and the interplay between statistical inference, machine learning methods and related applications. The refereed contributions originate from the 10th International Workshop on Simulation and Statistics, SimStat 2019, which was held in Salzburg, Austria, September 2–6, 2019, and were either presented at the conference or developed afterwards, relating closely to the topics of the workshop.
