Elements of Statistics for the Life and Social Sciences

This book was written to myself at about the time I began graduate studies in anthropology-the sort of thing a Samuel Beckett character might do. It is about the conduct of research. In a very real sense the purpose is partially to compensate for the inadequacies of my professors. Perhaps this is what education is about. The effort has not been an unqualified success, but it has been extremely gratifying. I was trained in anthropology. After completing the Ph. D. I went to Stanford on a post-doctoral fellowship. At the time, this was a novelty and the depart ment was not prepared for such a thing. To stay occupied I began attending lectures, seminars, and discussion groups in mathematics and...

Web Mining and Social Networking

This book examines the techniques and applications involved in the Web Mining, Web Personalization and Recommendation and Web Community Analysis domains, including a detailed presentation of the principles, developed algorithms, and systems of the research in these areas. The applications of web mining, and the issue of how to incorporate web mining into web personalization and recommendation systems are also reviewed. Additionally, the volume explores web community mining and analysis to find the structural, organizational and temporal developments of web communities and reveal the societal sense of individuals or communities. The volume will benefit both academic and industry communities interested in the techniques and applications of web search, web data management, web mining and web knowledge discovery, as well as web community and social network analysis.

Taking Biology Seriously

"Inmaculada de Melo-Martin carefully defend the importance of social and political policies to guide the bio ethical co-construction of a better life for all. As she argues with edifying balance, only by taking biology seriously can we become serious in appreciating its true benefits and counter the illusory hopes and fears that are often projected upon it."--Carl Mitcham, Colorado School of Mines.

Why Heaven Kissed Earth

In short, the central argument of this study posits that Goodwin's Christology is grounded in, and flows out of, the eternal covenant of redemption, also known as the pactum salutis or »counsel of peace«. That is to say, his Christology does not begin in the temporal realm at the incarnation, but stretches back into eternity when the persons of the Trinity covenanted to bring about the salvation of fallen mankind. Goodwin's Christology moves from the pretemporal realm to the temporal realm with a decidedly eschatological thrust, that is, with a view to the glory of the God-man, Jesus Christ. What this work does is connect two vital aspects of Reformed theology, namely, the doctrine of Christ and the concept of the covenant. The findings of this study show that, for Goodwin, Christ is the Christ of the covenant.

Distributed Multimedia Information Retrieval

During recent years, huge efforts have been made to establish digital libraries, in a variety of media, offered from a variety of sources, and intended for a variety of professional and private user communities. As digital data collections proliferate, problems of resource selection and data fusion become major issues. Traditional search engines, even the best ones, are unable to provide access to the hidden web of information that is only available via digital library search interfaces. Originating from the SIGIR 2003 Workshop on Distributed Information Retrieval, held in Toronto, Canada in August 2003, this book presents extended and revised workshop papers as well as several invited papers on the topic to round off coverage of the core issues. The papers are devoted to recent research on the design and implementation of methods and tools for resource discovery, resource description, resource selection, data fusion, and user interaction.

Many contemporary theologians claim that the classical picture of God painted by Augustine and Aquinas is both outmoded and unbiblical. But rather than abandoning the traditional view completely, John Feinberg seeks a reconstructed model—one that reflects the ongoing advances in human understanding of God's revelation while recognizing the unchanging nature of God and His Word. Feinberg begins by exploring the contemporary concepts of God, particularly the openness and process views, and then studies God's being, nature, and acts—all to articulate a mediating understanding of God not just as the King, but the King who cares! Part of the Foundations of Evangelical Theology series.
