Political Philosophy in Japan focuses on the politics of Japan's pre-eminent philosophical school - the Kyoto School - and particularly that of its founder, Nishida Kitarô (1870-1945). Goto-Jones contends that, far from being apolitical, Nishida's philosophy was explicitly and intentionally political, and that a proper political reading of Nishida sheds new light on the controversies surrounding the alleged complicity of the Kyoto School in Japanese ultra-nationalism. Nishida Kitaro (1870–1945) is considered Japan's first and greatest modern philosopher. As founder of the Kyoto School, he began a rigorous philosophical engagement and dialogue with Western philosophical traditions, especially the work of G. W. F. Hegel. John W. M. Krummel explores the Buddhist roots of Nishida's thought and places him in connection with Hegel and other philosophers of the Continental tradition. Krummel develops notions of self-awareness, will, being, place, the environment, religion, and politics in Nishida's thought and shows how his ethics of humility may best serve us in our complex world.

Kitarō Nishida’s Philosophy of Life
Nishida Kitarō’s Philosophy of Life traces the development of the philosopher’s thought by focusing on the keyword “life” as a unifying thread. Active from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century, Nishida was part of the first generation of Japanese philosophers who tried to develop an original philosophy under the influence of – and in response to – Western philosophy. In his native Japan, he has often been interpreted in the context of Eastern thought and Zen Buddhism, as well as in relation to phenomenology (i.e., Husserl and Heidegger). The current volume instead presents an alternative reading of Nishida, noting the influence of William James, Henri Bergson and Neo-Kantianism on his thought, and highlighting a line of development that runs in parallel to the thought of the midtwentieth century French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze.
