Citizen science, the active participation of the public in scientific research projects, is a rapidly expanding field in open science and open innovation. It provides an integrated model of public knowledge production and engagement with science. As a growing worldwide phenomenon, it is invigorated by evolving new technologies that connect people easily and effectively with the scientific community. Catalysed by citizens’ wishes to be actively involved in scientific processes, as a result of recent societal trends, it also offers contributions to the rise in tertiary education. In addition, citizen science provides a valuable tool for citizens to play a more active role in sustainable deve...

Donald Vogel arrived in Dallas at the beginning of World War II after a sojourn at the Art Institute of Chicago. "The feeling of space, its clear clean atmosphere, the calm courtesy of the people and promises of growth all gave hope to a young, would-be painter. What I could not have anticipated was that there would be no gentle growth: it exploded in every direction and the money followed." Along with the wealth came East Coast art dealers who followed the oil field trails throughout Oklahoma and Texas. They brought dubious art and fake old masters, but the same growth that attracted disreputable dealers also made it possible for Vogel to be part of bringing fine works of art to Dallas, fir...

"This book deals with a single phase of art, and perhaps the most personal one: the drawings produced by the artist as he seeks ideas to use for a composition in another medium. These drawings express the first thoughts of the artist. They are not inhibited by the possibility that others might see them, or that they might be exhibited publicly. I share these drawings with you, along with the resulting paintings and a minimum of words, to induce you to discover for yourself the pleasures of drawing and to learn to understand the secrets hidden in a simple line."--

The Boardinghouse

  • Categories: Art

The Boardinghouse is an account of how a diverse group of high spirited, self-assured, talented youths were able to meld in supporting one another during Vogel's first year as a student at the Chicago Art Institute's School of Fine Art during the desperate times of the great depression. The book portrays one year in the lives of eighteen young men from various parts of the country who shared similar dreams of becoming an artist. In this Artist Community House, under the charge of Malcolm Hackett, some of the other young art students included Don Goodall, later to become Chairman of the Art Department at the University of Southern California and then the University of Texas at Austin; Gibson Danes, later to become chairman of the Art Department at UCLA and then Yale School of Art and Archeology; Dick Shaw who later would work on such cartoons as "Grin and Bear It," and "Mr. Magoo."

My Life and Work with Alfred Vogel

My Life and Work with Alfred Vogel is the third instalment of Jan de Vries's memoirs covering his life and career as a renowned alternative health practitioner. This volume focuses on his long and fruitful working relationship with Alfred Vogel, which prospered right up until Vogel's death in 1996. Jan de Vries was the only person to whom Vogel taught his unique healing methods and philosophies, and as a result of their close professional links they also became great friends, sharing a mutual respect and trust over a period of 40 years. In this revealing and informative memoir, de Vries details the methods employed by Vogel and the profound influence that the Swiss naturopath had on him and his career. De Vries reflects upon the controversial, often almost impossible, situations that he shared with Vogel as they travelled throughout the world to promote their methods and practices. De Vries also provides invaluable practical advice for daily living and stresses how, by employing old folklore methods and taking on board aspects of dietary management, long-term health and happiness can be achieved by all.

Quantum Optics

This is the third, revised and extended edition of the acknowledged "Lectures on Quantum Optics" by W. Vogel and D.-G. Welsch. It offers theoretical concepts of quantum optics, with special emphasis on current research trends. A unified concept of measurement-based nonclassicality and entanglement criteria and a unified approach to medium-assisted electromagnetic vacuum effects including Van der Waals and Casimir Forces are the main new topics that are included in the revised edition. The rigorous development of quantum optics in the context of quantum field theory and the attention to details makes the book valuable to graduate students as well as to researchers. Conflict Minerals, Inc.

In the twenty-first century, the relationship between violent conflict and natural resources has become a matter of intense public and academic debate. As a result of fervent activism and international campaigning, the flagship case of ‘conflict minerals’ has captured global attention. This term groups together the artisanal tin, tantalum (coltan), tungsten and gold originating from war zones in Central Africa. Known as ‘digital minerals’ for their use in high-end technology, their exploitation and trade has been singled out in numerous media and United Nations reports as a key driver of violence, provoking an unprecedented popular outcry and prompting transnational efforts to promot...

High- and Low-Valent tris-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Iron Complexes

Carola Vogel’s PhD thesis focuses on the synthesis, and structural and spectroscopic characterization of the first high valent iron nitride complexes. In her interdisciplinary and collaborative research Carola also describes the reactivity studies of a unique iron (V) nitride complex with water. These studies show that quantitative yields of ammonia are given at ambient conditions. High valent iron nitride and oxo species have been proposed as key intermediates in many bio-catalytic transformations, but until now these species have proven exceedingly challenging to isolate and study. Iron complexes in high oxidation states can thus serve as models for iron-containing enzymes to help us understand biological systems or aid our development of more efficient industrial catalysts.
