This collection highlights the interplay between cognition and language learning, and tackles such issues as cognition and skills development, language processing, vocabulary memorisation, metaphor identification, vocabulary attrition, motivation, and the perception of phonemes, among others. The contributions here represent current forward-looking research in the field of cognitive linguistics and education. To date, there has been a sharp need for innovative research that examines the interrelationship between cognition and the process of language learning. This volume responds to this requirement, bringing together researchers interested in this research area to discuss their contributions, and to open debates about the role played by cognition in language learning. The book will appeal to Masterâ (TM)s and doctoral students, teachers, educational practitioners, and researchers interested in research into the interaction between cognition and language learning.

Anger is one of the basic emotions of human emotional experience, informing and guiding many of our choices and actions. Although it has received considerable scholarly attention in a number of disciplines, including linguistics, a basic question has still remained unresolved: why do variations in the folk model of anger exist across languages if it is indeed a basic emotion rooted in largely universal bodily experience? By drawing on a wide selection of comparable linguistic data from dozens of languages (including a number of less-researched languages), this volume provides the most comprehensive account of what is universal and what is variable in the folk model of anger – and why. It a...
The volume presents an innovative set of researches featuring theoretical and practical discussions of the proverb in cognition and culture. To date, there seems to be a need for state-of-the-art research into this subject matter. This volume aims at responding to this need. The chapters contribute, from a Cognitive Linguistics interdisciplinary perspective, to the existing body of literature on the proverb. The book begins with a first part containing three chapters concerned with theoretical discussions of proverbs in cognition and culture. The three chapters in the second part ponder proverbs within a cognitive-cross-cultural perspective. The third part of the volume includes three chapte...
Metaphor and Intercultural Communication examines in detail the dynamics of metaphor in interlingual contact, translation and globalization processes. Its case-studies, which combine methods of cognitive metaphor theory with those of corpus-based and discourse-oriented research, cover contact linguistic and cultural contacts between Chinese, English including Translational English and Aboriginal English, Greek, Kabyle, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, and Spanish. Part I introduces readers to practical and methodological problems of the intercultural transfer of metaphor through empirical (corpus-based and experimental) studies of translators' experiences and strategies in dealing with figurative...

"What role did emotions play in anti-colonial activist decisions during the Algerian Revolution? How were emotions like pride and shame, love and disgust used to overturn the colonial myth, and what new stories did Algerian and European militants weave to help audiences imagine a world without colonization? This book answers these questions by delving into the police confessions and court cases, tracts and manifestos, poetry and personal diaries of French and Algerian anti-colonial activists. These sources reveal a rich world of exiles and border-crossings, emotional exchanges and violations of emotional regimes"--
This book presents the results of a large-scale experiment into interpretations of the metaphor “the Nation as a Body” among 1,800+ respondents from 30 linguistic and cultural backgrounds. In this first account of an empirical study of cross-cultural global metaphor interpretation of that scale, Musolff confirms that the meanings of metaphors are complex, culturally mediated and may differ for senders and recipients. The book provides a historical and cultural map of the traditions underlying differences in how the nation as a body – or, “the body politic” – is understood. Musolff challenges the hypotheses of the universality of “the nation” as a predominantly male-gendered and hierarchically organized concept and, in so doing, puts into question some of the key presuppositions of traditional historical and cognitive approaches to metaphor. For scholars and students of figurative language, the book lays out methodological foundations for cross-cultural metaphor comparison and reveals hidden meaning differences in political metaphor in English as lingua franca.
