Edited and written by clinician-experts at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, the book covers the full range of oncologic emergencies, from cardiac and neurologic to orthopedic to hematologic, and addresses important palliative care, ethical, and Emergency Department considerations. Chapters are structured with busy clinicians in emergent and urgent settings in mind, and each chapter concludes with a series of key practice points and a list of suggested readings for those who wish to delve deeper into a subject. For any clinician facing the increasing number of patients who experience an oncologic emergency, this is an up-to-date, clinically focused, and authoritative resource.

Recent therapeutic advances in cancer treatment indicate that cancer is becoming a chronic disease rather than a killer. This comprehensive text is the first to define and address the broad spectrum of acute and chronic internal medicine disorders that occur in cancer patients and cancer survivors as side-effects of the disease itself, or of the treatment regimens. The authors cover nononcologic aspects of internal medicine such as anorexia, obesity, bone loss, diabetes, depression, pain, fatigue, congestive heart failure, skin disorders, and pneumonia. This book is conceived as a companion to standard internal medicine and oncology texts - a comprehensive reference resource for internists caring for cancer patients and oncologists in practice. The text is extensively indexed for easy access and retrieval of information.

Introduction: While radiotherapy (RT) is an established treatment for primary and secondary brain tumors, it is also considered a risk factor for intracranial hemorrhage. This study aims to assess how prior cranial irradiation affects the short term survival of patients with acute spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (ICH).Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of all patients presenting with spontaneous ICH to the Emergency Department (ED) of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 9/1/2006 to 2/16/2016. Patients were identified using all ICH related ICD-9 codes in a billing database. Then data regarding the patientu2019s cancer type, RT status and outcomes was collecte...

Apoptosis in Carcinogenesis and Chemotherapy

Although research on carcinogenesis has focused more on cellular proliferation than on cell death, yet understanding the mechanism of apoptosis may have important implications for cancer therapy. This book brings together experts from around the world who will discuss the common cancers encountered in clinical practice in the laboratory setting. During the induction of these common cancers, the role of apoptosis in cellular and molecular changes is emphasized, critically highlighting possible anti-cancer strategies. For those who are interested in carcinogenesis and for those who are seeking new approaches to anti-cancer therapy, this book is an important reference. It serves not only as a r...

Emerging Learnings in Cell Therapy: Novel Binding Domains, Universal CAR-T Cells, and More

The Past decade has seen significant advances in cancer immunotherapy with the development of multiple strategies including monoclonal antibodies targeting checkpoint blockers, oncolytic viruses, fusion proteins and cell therapies such as tumor-specific chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-) T cell therapy, NK cell therapy and γδ-T-cell therapy. Multiple cell therapies including sipuleucel-T (Provange), axicabtagene ciloleucel (Yescarta), brexucabtagene autoleucel (Tecartus), tisagenlecleucel (Kymriah), lisocabtagene maraleucel (Breyanzi), idecabtagene vicleucel (Abecma) and ciltacabtagene autoleucel (Carvykti) have been approved by the US FDA for different hematological cancers and hormone-refractory prostate cancer (Provange). Impressive results were noted with CAR-T cell therapy with objective response rates (ORR) as high as 100% in certain hematological cancers and with responses durable over 10 years in some patients.
