Genetic Criticism in Motion
Genetic criticism investigates creative processes by analysing manuscripts and other archival sources. It sheds light on authors’ working practices and the ways works are developed on the writer’s desk or in the artist’s studio. This book provides a cross-section of current international trends in genetic criticism, half a century after the birth of the discipline in Paris. The last two decades have witnessed an expansion of the field of study with new kinds of research objects and new forms of archival material, along with various kinds of interdisciplinary intersections and new theoretical perspectives. The essays in this volume represent various European literary and scholarly traditions discussing creative processes from Polish poetry to French children’s literature, as well as topical issues such as born-digital literature and the application of forensic methodology to manuscript studies. Rhyme and Rhyming in Verbal Art, Language, and Song
This collection of thirteen chapters answers new questions about rhyme, with views from folklore, ethnopoetics, the history of literature, literary criticism and music criticism, psychology and linguistics. The book examines rhyme as practiced or as understood in English, Old English and Old Norse, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Karelian, Estonian, Medieval Latin, Arabic, and the Central Australian language Kaytetye. Some authors examine written poetry, including modernist poetry, and others focus on various kinds of sung poetry, including rap, which now has a pioneering role in taking rhyme into new traditions. Some authors consider the relation of rhyme to other types of form, notably alliteration. Nonsense and Other Senses
This book deals with a topic that is gaining increasing critical attention, the literature of nonsense and absurdity. The volume gathers together twenty-one essays on various aspects of literary nonsense, according to criteria that are deliberately inclusive and eclectic. Versification
Versification describes the marriage of language and poetic form through which poetry is produced. Formal principles, such as metre, alliteration, rhyme, or parallelism, take precedence over syntax and prosody, resulting in expressions becoming organised as verse rather than prose. The aesthetic appeal of poetry is often linked to the potential for this process to seem mysterious or almost magical, not to mention the interplay of particular expressions with forms and expectations. The dynamics of versification thus draw a general interest for everyone, from enthusiasts of poetry or forms of verbal art to researchers of folklore, ethnomusicology, linguistics, literature, philology, and more. The authors of the works in the present volume explore versification from a variety of angles and in diverse cultural milieus. The focus is on metrics in practice, meaning that the authors concentrate not so much on the analysis of the metrical systems per se as on the ways that metres are used and varied in performance by individual poets and in relationship to language.
Kukunor
Lauri Viidan (1916–1965) runoelma Kukunor. Satu ihmislapsille (1949) on suomalaisen runouden klassikko ja yksi kaunokirjallisen nonsensen varhaisimmista tienraivaajista Suomessa. Tämä väitöskirja tarkastelee Viidan monitasoista runoelmaa eurooppalaista nonsensekirjallisuutta vasten ja selvittää, millaisia suhteita Kukunorin unipiirteillä on nonsensen lajitraditioon. Vertailukohtina ovat lajin tunnetuimmat eurooppalaiset mestarit Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll ja Christian Morgenstern. Nonsensekirjallisuuden ja unen suhteista on kirjoitettu alan ensimmäisistä tutkimuksista lähtien, mutta tämä teos on ensimmäinen aihepiiriin keskittyvä tutkimus. Teos toimii suomenkielisenä johdatuksena länsimaiseen nonsensekirjallisuuteen sekä kirjallisuuden unipiirteiden tutkimukseen. Se osoittaa, että Viidan rakastettu mutta outona pidetty Kukunor avautuu uudella ja kiehtovalla tavalla nonsensekirjallisuuden perinnettä vasten.
