Who's playing my violin?

Around midnight, early October 1944. Riga. A Latvian father and his six-year-old son flee their home and the land of their birth for an uncertain future. The world is at war and their journey will be perilous. Life throws the dice – and for Martins Saldais the toss was unlucky. Yet one thing sustained him: his promise to his young wife on her deathbed that he would always look after Juris, their baby son. Six years later, facing deportation or worse, Martins and Juris fled their homeland. Their refugee journey was often horrifying. Constantly anxious and at times starving, they travelled some 800 kilometres through war-torn Europe – around half of that on foot – to reach the safety of ...

Our First Republicans

Lang, Harpur and Deniehy were three of the most outspoken proponents of the Australian Republic in the mid-19th century. Their arguments -- concise, powerful and balanced -- are as relevant today in current Republican debate as they were then. This edited selection of their prose brings together for the first time articles, speeches and letters which show the political and cultural currents in NSW over three decades of important political change.

In her study of key radio dramas broadcast from 1930 to 1943, Lauren Rea analyses the work of leading exponents of the genre against the wider backdrop of nation-building, intellectual movements and popular culture in Argentina. During the period that has come to be known as the infamous decade, radio serials drew on the Argentine literary canon, with writers such as Héctor Pedro Blomberg and José Andrés González Pulido contributing to the nation-building project as they reinterpreted nineteenth-century Argentina and repackaged it for a 1930s mass audience. Thus, a historical romance set in the tumultuous dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas reveals the conflict between the message trans...

The Judicial Politics of Economic Integration analyses development strategies and regional integration in the Andean Community (the former Andean Pact), focusing on the establishment of the Andean Court of Justice and its case law, as well as the intellectual underpinnings that made such an impressive reform possible. The court is a transplant taken from the European integration process, and it materializes the visions, expectations, and dreams of the transnational development movement of "integration through law". The book discusses the outcomes of the Court in light of the debates about judicial reform in the process of development and regional integration. Although clearly confirming seve...

Biodiversity in Ecosystems

The term biodiversity has become a mainstream concept that can be found in any newspaper at any given time. Concerns on biodiversity protection are usually linked to species protection and extinction risks for iconic species, such as whales, pandas and so on. However, conserving biodiversity has much deeper implications than preserving a few (although important) species. Biodiversity in ecosystems is tightly linked to ecosystem functions such as biomass production, organic matter decomposition, ecosystem resilience, and others. Many of these ecological processes are also directly implied in services that the humankind obtains from ecosystems. The first part of this book will introduce different concepts and theories important to understand the links between ecosystem function and ecosystem biodiversity. The second part of the book provides a wide range of different studies showcasing the evidence and practical implications of such relationships.
