En México, el estudio y práctica de la psicología social, como una disciplina enfocada a la investigación científica de cómo los individuos y su entorno social se influyen mutuamente, se consolidó hasta el tercer cuarto del siglo XX. Sin embargo sus raíces, como las de la psicología mexicana, se extienden hasta la época de la colonia en que hombres como Benito Díaz de Gamarra y Manuel María Gorriño sientan en la Nueva España las bases de la filoso a moderna y comienzan a influenciar y registrar el pulso de la nación. Recuperar ese legado para perfilar el desarrollo de la psicología social en México es el objetivo de Salvador Iván Rodríguez, quien hurga en la historia distinguiendo aquellos elementos que hicieron posible su ejercicio actual, al mismo tiempo que vierte luz sobre fuentes hasta hoy desconocidas.
