The images in Sam Contis's 'Deep Springs' were made in a remote valley just east of the Sierra Nevada and north of Death Valley. The work centres on a small, all-male liberal arts college, founded in 1917 as a site of alternative education. There, amid the wide expanse of mountainous desert, academic study is, to this day, combined with manual labour on the school's cattle ranch and farm. The college and its surroundings provide a stage on which Contis is able to explore broader themes of the construction of myth, place, and masculine identity. Bringing together her own photographs with archival pictures made at the college nearly a century ago, 'Deep Springs' engages with the enduring image of the American West, one that Hollywood, mass media, and the history of American photography have imprinted into the collective psyche. 00Exhibition: The Berkeley Art Museum, United States (03.05-27.08.2017) / Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, New York City, United States (12.05.-18.06.2017).

The result of a series of chance encounters, 'Glitter in My Wounds' embraces accident and improvisation in the face of the restrictive categories that pervade art and life. The book is shaped around a series of portraits of the transgender activist and actress Gersande Spelsberg made by the artist and educator Adam Broomberg. Spelsberg sat for Broomberg and together they made 100 photographs, shot on 5x4 negative and lit only using the sun and mirrors--the same distinctive lighting technique employed in Helmar Lerski's remarkable series "Metamorphosis Through Light". Spelsberg's story of transitioning reflects on and questions the many toxic pre-existing conditions that shape contemporary ge...

Towards the end of her life, Dorothea Lange (American, 1895-1965) remarked that "all photographs-not only those that are so-called 'documentary,' and every photograph really is documentary and belongs in some place, has a place in history-can be fortified by words." Though Lange's career is widely heralded, this connection between words and pictures has received scant attention. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this catalogue provides a fresh approach to some of her best-known and beloved photographs, highlighting the ways in which these images first circulated in magazines, government reports, books, etc. An introductory text by curator Sarah Hermanso...

Overpass is about what it means to move through the landscape. Walking along a vast network of centuries-old footpaths through the English countryside, artist Sam Contis focuses on stiles, the simple structures that offer a means of passage over walls and fences and allow public access through privately owned land. In her immersive sequences of black-and-white photographs, they become repeating sculptural forms in the landscape, invitations to free movement on one hand and a reminder of the history of enclosure on the other. Made from wood and stone, each unique, they appear as markers pointing the way forward, or decaying and half-hidden by the undergrowth. An essay by writer Daisy Hildyard contextualizes this body of work within histories of the British landscape and contemporary ecological discourses. In an age of rising nationalism and a renewed insistence on borders, Overpass invites us to reflect on how we cross boundaries, who owns space, and the ways we have shaped the natural environment and how we might shape it in the future.

In this book, Sam Contis presents a new window onto the work of the American photographer Dorothea Lange. Drawing from Lange's extensive archive, Contis constructs a fragmented, unfamiliar world centred around the figure of the day sleeper - at once a symbol of respite and oblivion. The book shows us one artist through the eyes of another, with Contis responding to resonances between her and Lange's ways of seeing. It reveals a largely unknown side of Lange, and includes previously unseen photographs of her family, portraiture from her studio, and pictures made in the streets of San Francisco and the East Bay. Day Sleeper will be featured alongside other works of Contis's in the exhibition Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures at the Museum of Modern Art, February-May 2020.

Sally Stein reconsiders Dorothea Lange?s iconic portrait of maternity and modern emblem of family values in light of Lange?s long-overlooked ?Padonna? pictures and proposes that ?Migrant Mother? should in fact be seen as a disruptive image of women?s conflictual relation to home, and the world. Stein is an American academic and cultural theorist living in Los Angeles. The interrelated topics she most often engages concern the multiple effects of documentary imagery, the politics of gender, and the status and meaning of black and white and color imagery on our perceptions, beliefs, even actions as consumers and citizens. 0Dr. Stein, Professor Emerita, UC Irvine, is an independent scholar base...
