A Chat About Samuel Merwin

Excerpt from A Chat About Samuel Merwin: Containing Also a List of His Published Volumes, Together With Sundry Excerpts From Critical Appreciations In this land of ours where everybody can read and few do, we dismiss the author as a man who has written a book, and let it go at that. We like to meet him, or at least we like to say we have met him; but when we do we don't know what to say to him. We feel we ought to talk about his books but we are afraid of getting in over our heads. If we knew the.author as well as his books, we'd know better than to talk to him about them, and so would not suffer from literary stage fright at the mere thought of breaking bread with a best seller. About the P...

It is an exciting story of adventures among the Redskins of New France in 1687. It begins with the return to Quebec of the hero, Captain Menard, after several years of hardships and fighting in the country of the Five Nations. He was the indis- pensable man, and so with only a day's holiday he was ordered to set out again with despatches for Frontenac. The authorities were planning a big campaign against the Indians, but were carrying out their arrangement with such publicity and want of judgment that the savages were rising before the French were ready for them. A few hours before Menard was to start he was told that he must take Mlle. St. Denis with him, as circum- stances made it necessar...

The Whip Hand is a classic western frontier adventure featuring young Captain Halloran of the Evanston crew of young boy sailors. Excerpt: "Sure he's dreaming. They haven't been gone twenty minutes. What's the matter with you!" Yes, it is only twenty minutes; and there is a weary, bitter hour yet for the poor devils before they may set foot on land. Another song is the cry, and more wood—heap her up! Again Apples mounts his grim perch—the head- and footstone of half a dozen forgotten sailors—and marches the "Grand Old Duke of York" up the hill, and marches him down again..."

Samuel Merwin (1874-1936), who also wrote as Merwin-Webster, was an American writer of historical fiction. He went to Northwestern University but he didn't graduate. He began his literary career by publishing two popular novels in collaboration with his boyhood friend Henry Kitchell Webster; The Short Line War (1899) and Calumet "K" (1901). Following the separation of this team, Merwin wrote many novels into the 1920s when his interest turned to drama. Many of his novels shed light on Chicago and the Midwest, making effective use of the Great Lakes as settings. His works include: His Little World: The Story of Hunch Badeau (1903), The Whip Hand: A Tale of the Pine Country (1903), The Merry Ann (1904), The Road-Builders (1905) and Goldie Green (1922).
