There are an estimated 1.2 billion young people aged 10-19 years worldwide, the largest generation of adolescents in history with more than 80 per cent living in developing countries, particularly in urban areas. The 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child established the rights of young people to services such as education, health, recreation and justice, yet there is a collective failure of countries to fulfill and protect these rights.
