Empirical Approaches to the Phonological Structure of Words
One of the basic grammatical categories in linguistics is the phonological word. But how are words made up in terms of their sounds? And how is the information on the sound structure of words used in the processing of words? The multidimensionality of the phonological word relates it to semantics, morphology, phonology and syntax. It is nevertheless a category that has only been an object of serious study since the prosodic turn in phonology and thus cannot be considered an established category of grammatical description. This volume brings together scholars interested in the complex relations of the phonological word, applying different empirical approaches.
Prosodic Detail in Neapolitan Italian
Recent findings on phonetic detail have been taken as supporting exemplar-based approaches to prosody. Through four experiments on both production and perception of both melodic and temporal detail in Neapolitan Italian, we show that prosodic detail is not incompatible with abstractionist approaches either. Specifically, we suggest that the exploration of prosodic detail leads to a refined understanding of the relationships between the richly specified and continuous varying phonetic information on one side, and coarse phonologically structured contrasts on the other, thus offering insights on how pragmatic information is conveyed by prosody.

Compound Stress in English
This volume addresses several claims about the two prominence patterns found in English nominal compounds in a rigorously empirical way. Listener proficiency to identify these patterns is investigated, and the acoustic properties that distinguish the patterns are identified. These properties are used to predict statistically the prominence pattern of any given compound. The book further analyzes the semantic and structural factors influencing the distribution of the prominence patterns, and addresses the extent of within- and across-speaker variability in English compound stress assignment.
Focus Particles in German
This study explores the grammar of focus particles in German. It gives a thorough description and analysis of focus particle constructions and links their syntactic, semantic, and information structural properties to their prosodic characteristics. The study also shows that focus particles present a particularly well-suited subject for the investigation of the modularity of grammar in general. The first part of the book deals with the syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of focus particle constructions and results in a modular account of the relation between their word order, information structure, and meaning. The second part presents a corpus study and several speech production and perception experiments investigating the prosodic realization of the constructions. The integration of these two lines of research results in a comprehensive theory of focus particles and of the interaction of grammar and information structure in German.
Methods in prosody
This book presents a collection of pioneering papers reflecting current methods in prosody research with a focus on Romance languages.
