Presenting an analysis of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in India, this book looks at the unique roots of the concept in India. It examines Gandhi’s philosophical moorings that inform India’s approach to CSR, and the role of civil society in setting an agenda for championing the rights of the stakeholders. The book goes on to focus on the role of the government in grooming the Indian business to be sensitive of its social concerns. Drawing on rich empirical data, the book shows that CSR in India cannot be conceptualized in ethnocentric terms. Arguing that it is not about ‘the typical Indianness’ of the articulation, it emphasizes the point that CSR in India needs to be conceptualized in a wider perspective by taking into account its philosophical roots with reference to the prevalent socio-economic and political context. The book is a valuable contribution to the literature on CSR, and is of interest to scholars of Asian Studies, business and development studies.

Festschrift

This is essentially a book which belongs to the genre of anthology of autobiographical narratives of some of the finest products of IIT Madras who have come together of their own accord, at the invitation of their former teacher, on the eve of his 80th birthday. Within its covers one can find situations of common occurrence and interest and different ways in which they are handled by different people. Their collective experiences have resulted in a cross-sectional view of current Indian society, looked at from different perspectives. They are presented in a semi- popular style which holds the attention of the readers riveted to these issues and their solutions. The presentation is fluid and conversational rather than serious and technical. As such it is bound to interest a large number of people who are engaged in various professions and belong to many different strata of Indian society.

A man who dedicated his life and work to the betterment of a nation, and his time and energy to the billions of young minds he wished to ignite. He has left back dreams in everyone, and the undying inspiration to make those dreams come true. A surfeit of contents has been interwoven to give this book a shape. To read through the pages will mean a journey through his life in entirety. Besides Kalam's own speeches and quotes, it also contains literary tributes by scientists, academicians and students, the interviews of his family members, and a real-time anecdote of his interment ceremony at Rameswaram. This isn't just a tribute, but a world beyond it to be read, explored and discovered.
