Canadian Financial Accounting Cases, 3rd edition has been developed to bridge the gap between the foundational concepts and the real world. Students are introduced to the case study methodology for financial accounting, which focuses on identifying the issue, understanding implications, developing alternatives, and making recommendations. Students must also be able to understand the overall financial reporting landscape and the overall impact of the individual accounting issues. The cases range from introductory level to advanced level and can be used as assignments, exams, or for in-class discussions. The cases have been developed using IFRS (Part I), ASPE (Part II) or ASNPO (Part III) as the accounting frameworks, providing students with exposure to many different types of organizational structures, and have been linked to the CPA Competency Map. Instructors are provided with detailed teaching notes and marking keys that will assist in guiding the class discussions and assessments.

Old Tacoma

In 1865, Job Carr paddled a canoe to his new homestead on a small harbor that would become Old Tacoma. The areas notorious reputationas The Wildest Port North of San Franciscos Barbary Coasthaunted it for decades after the tall-masted schooners, sailors, brothels, and saloons were gone. Situated on the deepwater shoreline of Commencement Bay to ship timber from the vast tracts surrounding it, Old Tacoma was bypassed by the Northern Pacific terminus in favor of New Tacoma a few miles away. Settled by waves of Scandinavian and Croatian immigrants to work the mills and purse seiners, Old Tacoma became an isolated community. Though industry, shipbuilding, and timber mills gave way to commerce and recreation, the community of Old Tacoma still retains the unique flavor of its colorful past.

Birth as an American Rite of Passage

Why do so many American women allow themselves to become enmeshed in the standardized routines of technocratic childbirth--routines that can be insensitive, unnecessary, and even unhealthy? Anthropologist Robbie Davis-Floyd first addressed these questions in the 1992 edition. Her new preface to this 2003 edition of a book that has been read, applauded, and loved by women all over the world, makes it clear that the issues surrounding childbirth remain as controversial as ever.

Developments in English

The history of the English language is a vast and diverse area of research. In this volume, a team of leading historians of English come together to analyse 'real' language, drawing on corpus data to shed new light on long-established issues and debates in the field. Combining synchronic and diachronic analysis, the chapters address the major issues in corpus linguistics – methodological, theoretical and applied – and place special focus on the use of electronic resources in the research of English and the wider field of digital humanities. Topics covered include polemical articles on the optimal use of corpus linguistic methods, macro-level patterns of text and discourse organisation, and micro-features such as interjections and hesitators. Covering Englishes from the past and present, this book is designed specifically for graduate students and researchers working in fields of corpus linguistics, the history of the English language, and historical linguistics.
