Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room
Seneca Village—a vibrant nineteenth-century community of predominantly Black landowners and tenants—flourished just west of The Met's current location until the city used eminent domain to seize the land in 1857, displacing its residents to make room for the construction of Central Park. The Met's latest Bulletin, Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room, imagines a different history in the form of a new type of installation that departs from traditionally Eurocentric period displays to present a fictional but resonant domestic space. Texts by Ian Alteveer, Hannah Beachler, Michelle Commander, and Sarah Lawrence honor the real, lived history of the Seneca Village residents, while also exploring works by Black creators from the eighteenth century to the present day through the empowering lens of Afrofuturism. Including images of new works by Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Roberto Lugo, and Cyrus Kabiru, as well as an original graphic novella by New York Times bestselling author and illustrator John Jennings, this publication foregrounds generations of Black creativity and looks forward to a resilient future.

Piranesi as Designer
Renowned as one of the finest printmakers of the eighteenth century, Giovanni Battista Piranesi is best known for his etched views of Rome and its antiquities, as well as for his highly influential suite of drawings entitled Carceri, or Imaginary Prisons. Trained as an architect, Piranesi revolutionized architecture and design through his combination of decorative elements and ornamental motifs from the Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, and Roman styles; yet his work as the designer of interiors and furnishings has been largely uncelebrated. Winston County, Alabama Cemeteries, Volume 1
The cemeteries of Winston County contain the ancestors of the descendants who populate the county. They contain the remains of the earliest settlers, Civil War soldiers, early county officials and politicians, merchants, tradesmen, farmers, and their familes. Without their successful efforts to carve an existence out of the Winston County wildnerness, the rest of us would not be here. Much of the history of the county was written on the old tombstones found across the county. Volume I of this two volume series alphabetically covers Winston County Cemeteries A through L beginning with the Addison Church of God Cemetery and ending with the Liberty Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The book contains dozens of pictures of the cemeteries plus hundreds of annotations which include sites of unmarked graves mentioned in newspaper accounts plus the company and unit of every known Civil War era soldier, both Union and Confederate. The book concludes with a full name index.
