Blood & Irony

"Gardner's reading of a wide range of published and unpublished texts recovers a multifaceted vision of the South. For example, during the war, while its outcome was not yet a foregone conclusion, women's writings sometimes reflected loyalty and optimism; at other times, they revealed doubts and a wavering resolve. According to Gardner, it was only in the aftermath of defeat that a more unified vision of the southern cause emerged. By the beginning of the twentieth century, however, white women - who remained deeply loyal to their southern roots - were raising fundamental questions about the meaning of southern womanhood in the modern era."--BOOK JACKET.

Unwelcome Americans

Selected by Choice magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title In eighteenth-century America, no centralized system of welfare existed to assist people who found themselves without food, medical care, or shelter. Any poor relief available was provided through local taxes, and these funds were quickly exhausted. By the end of the century, state and national taxes levied to help pay for the Revolutionary War further strained municipal budgets. In order to control homelessness, vagrancy, and poverty, New England towns relied heavily on the "warning out" system inherited from English law. This was a process in which community leaders determined the legitimate hometown of unwanted persons or famili...

While I have dealt with some of Oglethorpe's settlers, the vast majority of the genealogies included in this collection deal with Georgians who descend from settlers from other states."--Note to the Reader.

History of the Town of Stonington, County of New London, Connecticut, from Its First Settlement in 1649 to 1900

Founded primarily on town, church, and charter records, Wheeler's History of Stonington is a harmonious blend of history and genealogy. The work is divided into two main sections: the "History of Stonington" and the "Genealogical Register of Stonington Families." Commencing with a survey of the founders and early settlements, with a glance at the original town patents, the first section deals at length with the history of Stonington in the various wars and includes lists of officers and men developed from the most reliable sources. The genealogies in the second section generally begin with the immigrant ancestor and continue through six or seven generations in the direct line of descent, providing a progression of names and dates of birth and marriage, with incidental references to places of residence, land holdings, and probated estates. Even though the genealogies are arranged in alphabetical order by family name and therefore are easily accessible, all names cited therein are included in the index, which has more than 12,000 entries.
