Sisters and Brothers, Daughters and Sons: Meeting the Needs of Old Parents (Enlarged Text Edition)

The number of middle-aged children today who have elderly parents is unprecedented. Having old parents, however, is rarely portrayed as a privilege. Too often parents are depicted as a problem for their adult children, in large part due to the disproportionate attention paid to the very frail, especially those with Alzheimer's disease. Rather than focusing only on adult children with very needy parents, the study reported in this book asked 149 pairs of siblings who had at least one parent over the age of 75 how they interacted with their elderly parents. The results are not only a more realistic picture of the full spectrum of later life families, but also a much more positive one. Written with minimal jargon, the book is intended not only for use in college classrooms but also for adult children and old parents who want to understand better their older family relationships. This special enlarged text edition is available exclusively at this location, from Unlimited Publishing LLC.

The first comprehensive exploration on the subject of older men, Older Men's Lives offers a multidisciplinary portrait of men and their concerns in later life. Using both a life-course and gendered perspective, the contributors to this collection of original articles point out that the image and self-image of men are continuously reconstructed over the life cycle. They examine older men's position in society and the changes wrought in their status and roles over time. Their relationship with their spouses, children, grandchildren, and friends are also explored, as are policy implications of a gendered, life-cycle view of masculinity. This volume also discusses faith development in older men,...
