Framing History in East-Central Europe and Beyond
During the 1970s todays Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung, BMBWF) supported the founding of the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the Austrian Chair at Stanford University in California. These foundings were the initial incentives for the worldwide `spreading' of similar institutions; currently, nine Centers for Austrian and Central European Studies exist in seven countries on three continents. The funding of the Ministry enables to connect senior scholars with young scholars, to help young PhD students, to participate in and to benefit from the scientific connection of experienced researchers, and to get in touch with the national scientific community by `sniffing scientific air', as the Austrians like to say. Furthermore, it aims to avoid prejudices, and to spread a better understanding and knowledge about Austria and Central Europe by promoting scientific exchange.
Digitised Newspapers – A New Eldorado for Historians?
The application of digital technologies to historical newspapers have changed the research landscape historians were used to. An Eldorado? Despite undeniable advantages, the new digital affordance of historical newspapers also transforms research practices and confronts historians with new challenges. Migrants and Refugees from the 1960s until Today
One of the oldest phenomena in the history of mankind is migration, whether peaceful or violent, voluntary or forced, barely noticeable outfl ow or mass movements. In the 19th century, regional migration to frontier territories, as for example in the Russian Empire or the United States of America, was a natural object of research. In the 1960s there was renewed interest in migration history in Western Europe due to the increase of immigration. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the so-called Eastern Bloc, the history of borders came again into focus, leading to a new generation in migration history. This development was reinforced by the "summer of migration" of 2015. The history of migration to Austria, especially during the Second Republic, has long been a topic overlooked by historians, but received increased attention since the 1980s. The present volume presents research currently being done on the history of migration to or through Austria.
History of Intellectual Culture 2/2023
The second issue of the yearbook History of Intellectual Culture (HIC) dedicates a thematic section to modes of publication. This volume addresses recent advances in publication studies and stresses the cultural formation of knowledge. By exploring and analyzing layers of presenting, sharing, and circulating knowledge, we invite readers to critically engage with questions of media uses and publishing practices and structures, both historically and in our contemporary digital age. The articles in this volume attest to the great variety of publication modes and perspectives, from the potential and limits of digitizing newspapers such as the New York Times to questions of positionality in building and using Wikipedia, from translation policies and female participation to the genre of university histories.
Autochthone Minderheiten und Migrant*innen
Freiwillige und unfreiwillige Migrationsbewegungen sind historisch gesehen nicht neu. Damals wie auch heute verändern sie Gesellschaften und bestimmen das Weltgeschehen. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich der Komplexität des Zusammenlebens alter, also historisch gewachsener, und neuer Minderheiten (Migrant*innen). Wenn in Südtirol von Migrant*innen als neue Minderheiten gesprochen wird, dann deshalb, um diese von den autochthonen deutschen, italienischen und ladinischen Sprachgemeinschaften abzuheben. Die vergleichende Untersuchung der Darstellung der neuen Minderheiten in Bezug auf wirtschaftliche, politische und identitätsstiftende Fragen im Zeitraum von 1990 bis 2015 in der deutsch- und italienischsprachigen Tagespresse Südtirols deckt Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der Argumentation über Migration und Migrant*innen auf.

Sie ist allgegenwärtig in medialen Repräsentationen, mithilfe derer gesellschaftliche Diskussion emotionalisiert, plausibilisiert oder moderiert wird - sei es in Kinofilmen, Romanen, Talkshows, Kunstaktionen oder Tageszeitungen.
