The Dawnhounds

Gideon the Ninth meets Black Sun in this queer, Māori-inspired debut fantasy about a police officer who is murdered, brought back to life with a mysterious new power, and tasked with protecting her city from an insidious evil threatening to destroy it. The port city of Hainak is alive: its buildings, its fashion, even its weapons. But, after a devastating war and a sweeping biotech revolution, all its inhabitants want is peace, no one more so than Yat Jyn-Hok a reformed-thief-turned-cop who patrols the streets at night. Yat has recently been demoted on the force due to “lifestyle choices” after being caught at a gay club. She’s barely holding it together, haunted by memories of a love...

The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.

The Domestic and the Foreign in Architecture

For centuries, across nations, dialogue between the domestic and the foreign has affected and transformed architecture. Today these dialogues have become highly intensified. The Domestic and the Foreign in Architecture examines how these exchanges manifest themselves in contemporary architecture, in terms of its aesthetic potential and its practice, which, in turn, are impacted by broad economic, cultural and political issues. This book traces how diverse cultural encounters inevitably modify conventional categories, standards and codes of architecture, such as domestic identity, its political and economic representations and the negotiations with what is deemed foreign. Theoretical reflections by distinguished scholars are accompanied by interviews with some of the most influential architects practicing today, as well as stunning visual presentations by professional photographers.

Language Contact and Linguistic Aspects of Bilingualism

This book consolidates earlier insights and proposes a model of contact linguistics and an innovative approach to the study of bilingualism. It explores the nature of major language contact phenomena, especially lexical borrowing, mixed languages, bilingual lexical and grammatical processing and representations, second language acquisition, codeswitching, and interlanguage. It examines the universal principles governing grammatical structures of languages in contact and differentiates the lexical and grammatical features of morphemes as outcomes of language contact. The proposed approach describes and explains some outstanding linguistic aspects of bilingualism with a focus on the mechanisms of the bilingual mind during bilingual processing and production at several levels of abstract lexical structure. Abundant naturally occurring examples support the claim that the languages in contact are never equally activated and that language-specific abstract entries in the bilingual mental lexicon are in contact, resulting in mutual influence during codeswitching, second language learning, and interlanguage development.

The Sunforge

Sascha Stronach’s queer, Maori-inspired Endsong trilogy reopens on a city in flames, where a magic-wielding pirate crew uncovers an age-old fight between the gods that threatens their world. The steel city of Radovan is consumed by fire between. Stranded in its harbor is the crew of the Kopek, the survivors of a bioterror attack overseas. But they bear scars: their captain, Sibbi, has gone missing; Yat, their newest Weaver, is fighting for control of her own mind; and their Weaving powers are in a badly weakened state. To disable the technology that prevents the group from escaping, Sen and Kiada must plot their way through the ruins of the foreign capital, which is patrolled by a hostile militia, using wits alone. But to navigate through Radovan, Kiada will have to rely on her own history with the city—one she shares with a band of misfits dubbed Fort Tomorrow and their leader, Ari, a charismatic thief. Ari may hold the key not only to saving Radovan from complete annihilation, but the history of their world, which will come into play as the gods begin to unleash destruction on humanity and one another.

The Unspoken Alliance

A revelatory account of Israel's secret military cooperation with apartheid South Africa. Prior to the Six-Day War, Israel was the darling of the international Left. But after its occupation of Palestinian territories in 1967, Israel found itself isolated from former allies and threatened anew by old enemies. Sasha Polakow-Suransky tells the full story of how Israel's booming arms industry and South Africa's isolation led to a hidden military alliance that grew deeper after the Likud Party came to power in 1977 and continued even after Israel passed sanctions against South Africa in the late 1980s. Polakow-Suransky has uncovered previously classified details of countless arms deals conducted behind the backs of Israel's diplomatic corps and in violation of the United Nations arms embargo. Based on extensive archival research and interviews with former generals and high-level government officials in both countries, this book tells a troubling story of Cold War paranoia, moral compromises, and Israel's estrangement from the Left.--From publisher description.

Sportengagement sozial benachteiligter Jugendlicher
