The Future of Cities and Energies in Western Europe explores a variety of theoretical and empirical approaches to researching energy issues in Western European cities, as well as urban energy transition. It serves as a collection of materials, instruments, ideas, and theories to embrace this subject. The contributions are interdisciplinary, drawing from areas such as sociology, urbanism, geoecology, architecture, and political science, thus demonstrating that this research topic, which is now gaining full legitimacy in traditional fields, requires open and reflexive dialogues.
Ancestors and descendants of Charles Frederick Hutchinson (1853-1911), born in Norwich, Vermont, a son of Frederick Hutchinson and Charlotte Fisk. He died in Smith Center, Kansas. The earliest ancestor, Rich- ard Hutchinson, emigrated from England to Salem, Massachusetts 1635. Charles married Maria Elizabeth Alter (1857-1915), born in Danville, Iowa to Jeremiah Reinhardt Alter and Elizabeth Romig. Early Alter ancestors came from Switzerland in 1753 and settled in Pennsylvania. Romig ancestors came originally from Germany and settled also in Pennsylvania. Descendants live in South Dakota, Kansas, California and elsewhere.
Companies can be valuable partners in delivering essential goods but must be appropriately motivated to participate in humanitarian crisis management. This work provides valuable insights into the status of humanitarian crisis management from the perspective of different stakeholders. It shows the potential of collaborative approaches, addressing the strengths and incentives of stakeholders accordingly.
A project planning and decision support model is developed and applied to identify and reduce risk and uncertainty in deconstruction project planning. It allows calculating building inventories based on sensor information and construction standards and it computes robust project plans for different scenarios with multiple modes, constrained renewable resources and locations. A reactive and flexible planning element is proposed in the case of schedule infeasibility during project execution.

Value chains of bio-based chemicals are very complex. Hence, a strategic decision support tool for bioeconomic site and logistics planning is developed. It includes an integrated model and three sub-models: optimization for the locations and capacities of pretreatment plants, technical for technical and economic evaluations, risk for the evaluation of uncertainties. As a result, the model suggests a nearly optimal location and the associated logistic network for the production of biochemicals.
Finite fossil resources require the exploitation of alternative energy sources like photovoltaics. A methodology for the economic potential assessment of photovoltaic installations on buildings including building facades has been developed. It is based on detailed irradiation simulations and a combination of geographically referenced and statistical data and has been applied to the German building stock for 2015. A prognosis for the potential development until 2050 is given.
