From the Ireland of St. Brendan to the baking deserts of Death Valley-- from the ancient rites of the Druata to the televangelists of modern times-- from the source of the greatest of human evils comes the tale of a demon with the most terrifying powers ever known-- A street bum finds all the water in his body turned to wine-- on a hospital AIDS ward, a young man checked at 7:00pm is found dead an hour later, his body appearing as if it had lain in the sun for three days -- a homeless woman accepts a gift of bread and fish from a stranger, only to find it multiply within her, exploding her from within-- Reverend Carrillee Maitland can find no sense or link between these bizarre deaths, and in an election year, there simply is no street crime in the city. It takes the assistance of Nick Praetorius, a man with a mysterious medallion and a centuries-old manuscript, to help Carrillee discover that not everyones idea of divine intervention is the same. For some, it means salvation; to others, it could mean a terrifying death by the most ancient words of the western world.

Scholars are seeking to identify how to constructively integrate faith into diplomacy. Proponents of faith-based diplomacy recognise that incorporating faith into peacemaking activities assists in managing identity-based conflict and religiously motivated violence in the contemporary international system. A promising strategy within the scope of faith-based diplomacy is interfaith dialogue. The study and practice of interfaith dialogue has been reinvigorated since the advent of 9/11, and yet the link between interfaith dialogue and diplomacy remains underdeveloped. The cases of Indonesia and the United States present lessons on how states can effectively use interfaith dialogue to achieve policy objectives, while recognising that some policies are detrimental to achieving diplomatic goals. This paper seeks to provide some framework for bringing interfaith dialogue into the scope of diplomacy by illuminating how faith-based diplomacy and interfaith dialogue can be innovative diplomatic perspectives useful in addressing contemporary global issues.

Can the power of the G20 be legitimate? This book examines the politics surrounding the G20’s efforts to act effectively and legitimately and the problems and challenges involved in this activity. Developing a critical constructivist conceptualisation of the G20, the book considers holistically and practically the ways that the G20 develops various forms of power and influence and acts as an apex form of global governance that seeks to be an overall coordinating forum to address global problems. Assessing how debates about the legitimacy of the G20 shaped its operation, Slaughter argues that the G20’s power can be legitimate despite a range of considerable challenges and limits. The book also explores what measures the G20 could take to be more legitimate in the future. Offering a direct and accessible consideration of the politics of legitimacy with respect to the G20, this book will be of interest to those attempting to understand and analyse the G20 as well as to scholars of IR theory, global political economy, global policy, diplomacy and globalisation.
