Exploitation filmmakers played a significant role in revolutionizing American cinema during the 1960s and early 1970s, churning out a string of independent Westerns, biker films, nudie-cuties and horror flicks in record times and often on shoestring budgets. With titles like Horror of the Blood Monsters, Cycle Savages and The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant, these films pushed the boundaries of acceptable on-screen violence and nudity and kept the American theater industry afloat as several major studios teetered on the brink of financial collapse. Forest Acres
Revolutionary War heroes Thomas Taylor and Wade Hampton I bought 18,500 acres along the Old Camden Road east of the proposed South Carolina capital city of Columbia in 1785. Taylor's family settled what became known as Quinine Hill and Edge Hill. The Dent family moved into the Gills Creek area and established Bethel Methodist Church. In the early 20th century, John Hughes Cooper turned Forest Lake into an upscale residential-recreational development. South Carolina senator James H. Hammond, who had purchased most of Quinine Hill, and Cooper led the creation of the City of Forest Acres in 1935. Cooper was elected the first mayor. Hammond was elected one of the first councilmen. From a community of just 300 people, Forest Acres has grown with churches, schools, parks, and vibrant shopping areas serving over 10,000 residents. Though surrounded by Columbia, Forest Acres is indeed a city apart.
Television Western Players of the Fifties
Modeled after the Mack V. Wright 1920 film version, the 1949 western television series The Lone Ranger made Clayton Moore's masked character one of the most recognized in American popular culture. Other westerns followed and by 1959 there were 32 being shown daily on prime time television. Many of the stars of the nearly 75 westerns went on to become American icons and symbols of the Hollywood West. This encyclopedia includes every actor and actress who had a regular role in a television western from 1949 through 1959.
