Trading in Lives?

Set in the tumultuous moments of 1944–45 Budapest, this work discusses the operations of the Budapest Relief and Rescue Committee. Drawing out the contradictions and complexities of the mass deportations of Hungarian Jews during the final phase of World War II, Szita suggests that in the Hungarian context, a commerce in lives ensued, where prominent Zionists like Dr. Rezso Kasztner negotiated with the higher echelons of the SS, trying to garner the freedom of Hungarian Jews. Szita's portrait of the controversial Kasztner is a more sympathetic rendition of a powerful Zionist leader who was later assassinated in Israel for his dealings with Nazi leaders. Szita reveals a story of interweaving personalities and conflicts during arguably the most tragic moment in European history. The author's extensive research is a tremendous contribution to a field of study that has been much ignored by scholarship-the Hungarian holocaust and the trade in human lives.

Daddy, are you going to build a house for the bus people too?" My daughter's question deeply touched my heart. . . . During my many trips to Baja, Mexico, I had been continually struck by the lack of adequate shelter and sheer human need in the basics of life. All of us are created in God's image, and therefore all have great value. I knew it was not God's intent for people to live in ramshackle shelters made of scrap wood, tarps, and cardboard. . . . I soon realized that God didn't intend our home build to be a one-time occurrence. He was calling us to something much bigger. As a teenager, Sean Lambert left college in 1979 to join Youth With A Mission (YWAM), now one of the world's largest m...

Go East!

For more than two centuries, Hungarians believed they shared an ethnic link with people of Japanese, Bulgarian, Estonian, Finnish, and Turkic descent. Known as "Turanism," this ideology impacts Hungarian politics, science, and cultural and ethnic identity even today. In Go East!: A History of Hungarian Turanism, Balázs Ablonczy examines the rise of Hungarian Turanism and its lasting effect on the country's history. Turanism arose from the collapse of the Kingdom of Hungary, when the nation's intellectuals began to question Hungary's place in the Western world. The influence of this ideology reached its peak during World War I, when Turanian societies funded research, economic missions, and ...

Constitutionalism under Stress reflects on comparative constitutionalism in Central and Eastern Europe through the lens of leading legal scholar Professor Wojciech Sadurski, whose writings have anticipated and scrutinized the current decline of liberal democracies and populist challenges to the rule of law in the region.Sadurski's work has chronicled the transition from concern for the most basic of human rights under authoritarian rule to the challenges of democratic governance. The compelling rights discourse of an earlier period gave way to claims of abuse of majoritarian prerogatives as the hopes of liberal democracy encountered the power of illiberalism. The theoretical responses offered for the preservation of liberal democracy, in light of the current turbulence regarding the rule of law in the region, produces a far reaching and effective reference tool on matters of constitutional capture and illiberal democracy.

Long Awaited West

What is Eastern Europe and why is it so culturally and politically separate from the rest of Europe? In Long Awaited West, Stefano Bottoni considers what binds these countries together in an increasingly globalized world. Focusing on economic and social policies, Bottoni explores how Eastern Europe developed and, more importantly, why it remains so distant from the rest of the continent. He argues that this distance arises in part from psychological divides which have only deepened since the global economic crisis of 2008, and provides new insight into Eastern Europe's significance as it finds itself located - both politically and geographically - between a distracted European Union and Russia's increased aggressions.

Dynamics of an Authoritarian System

This conceptually synthetic and empirically rich book demonstrates the vulnerability of democratic settings to authoritarianism and populism. Six scholars from various professional fields explore here the metamorphosis of a political party into a centralized authoritarian system. Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party needed less than ten years to accomplish this transformation in Hungary. In 2010, after winning a majority that could make changes in the constitution – two-thirds of the parliamentary seats, they evolved and stabilized the system, which produced again the two-thirds majority in 2014 and 2018. The authors reveal how a democratic setting can be used as a device for political captu...

Giving Back

Business entrepreneurs have always played a key role in America's financial growth. Now social entrepreneurs are also being recognized for their significant contributions. Management expert Peter Drucker insists that "social entrepreneurship ... is as important as economic entrepreneurship. More important, perhaps." That message resonates with today's businessmen and women. They realize that in addition to economic health, the health of society must not be overlooked. The successes featured in this book come from a variety of backgrounds and represent a spectrum of social and spiritual concerns. They are practical idealists who use modern tools and technology to share the age-old love of God with the disadvantaged -- from at-risk kids to dysfunctional families to impoverished minorities to the homeless. Throughout Giving Back, authors Oster and Hamel highlight practical principles that will help you use your resources, abilities, and influence to create positive social change and improve the world your grandchildren will inherit. More Tales from Hog Heaven

The University of Arkansas and its Razorbacks hold a special place in the hearts of Arkansans, not simply because the state has no professional sports teams, but because of the colorful players and coaches to have passed through the campus gates. Author Nate Allen chronicles the good, the bad, and the funny from Arkansas history in his second book about Razorback athletics, More Tales from Hog Heaven. Fans will be able to read more tales about the football program's adjustment in 1998 from the dour Danny Ford to the upbeat Houston Nutt, and about Lou Holtz's one-liners that seared their targets, but sometimes boomeranged. They will meet the legendary track coach who told one of his Irish athletes to row back home, and read about sportswriter Orville Henry's penchant for deflating self-important bowl officials. More Tales from Hog Heaven will prove to be a must-have addition to any Razorback fan's library.
