Islam and the Heroic Image

Throughout the world and over many centuries, the cultures in which Islam has been a major presence have created stories in word and picture to celebrate the men and women who best exemplify each culture's aspirations. This is the story of how those heroic figures have both shaped and been shaped by the religious tradition called Islam.

Objects of Translation

  • Categories: Art

Objects of Translation offers a nuanced approach to the entanglements of medieval elites in the regions that today comprise Afghanistan, Pakistan, and north India. The book--which ranges in time from the early eighth to the early thirteenth centuries--challenges existing narratives that cast the period as one of enduring hostility between monolithic "Hindu" and "Muslim" cultures. These narratives of conflict have generally depended upon premodern texts for their understanding of the past. By contrast, this book considers the role of material culture and highlights how objects such as coins, dress, monuments, paintings, and sculptures mediated diverse modes of encounter during a critical but ...

Transformations of Romanness

Transformations of Romanness

Roman identity is one of the most interesting cases of social identity because in the course of time, it could mean so many different things: for instance, Greek-speaking subjects of the Byzantine empire, inhabitants of the city of Rome, autonomous civic or regional groups, Latin speakers under ‘barbarian’ rule in the West or, increasingly, representatives of the Church of Rome. Eventually, the Christian dimension of Roman identity gained ground. The shifting concepts of Romanness represent a methodological challenge for studies of ethnicity because, depending on its uses, Roman identity may be regarded as ‘ethnic’ in a broad sense, but under most criteria, it is not. Romanness is indeed a test case how an established and prestigious social identity can acquire many different shades of meaning, which we would class as civic, political, imperial, ethnic, cultural, legal, religious, regional or as status groups. This book offers comprehensive overviews of the meaning of Romanness in most (former) Roman provinces, complemented by a number of comparative and thematic studies. A similarly wide-ranging overview has not been available so far.

Mozarabs in Medieval and Early Modern Spain

Mozarabs in Medieval and Early Modern Spain

This volume explores the co-existence of Christianity and Islam on the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages-- the official religions of Muslim al-Andalus on the one hand, and the Christian kingdoms in the north of the peninsula on the other. It examines the meaning of the word 'Mozarab' and the history and nature of these people. First the author explains what being a non-Muslim meant in al-Andalus and then considers Mozarabism in León and Toledo. Finally, he explores the issues that arose when Mozarabs were relocated in twelfth-century Aragón, and then, in sixteenth-century Toledo, when they were striving to retain their identity.
