Conservation of Living Nature and Resources

This book is based on our two books, published in the USSR and translated in a number of other countries Conservation of living nature: problems and perspectives (1983) and The levels of conservation of living nature (1985). It differs from the vast majority of the numerous books on conservation and environment, which are mainly devoted either to specific problems of conservation of certain taxons, or to problems of conservation of prescribed regions, or to general issues of environmental conservation in toto, while the problems of the conservation of living nature are represented only to a small degree. Our book is one of the volumes - at present not numerous - that place a high value on the diversity ofliving nature as the basis for the existence and development of mankind on the Earth. Living nature, besides its own intrinsic value, at all times was, is now and will ever remain the sole, unique and indispensable resource and provider for mankind.

Offering a new perspective on the hazards of pollution, Biological Effects of Surfactants examines the effects of anionic, non-ionic, cationic surfactants, and detergents on a wide range of organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems. The author establishes new quantitative characteristics of the effects and presents study results on newly discovered phenomena. While proposing and substantiating new priorities and approaches for testing, assessing, and characterizing the biological activities and hazards of substances, the book illustrates how the data obtained can be used to develop effective environmental remediation and protection measures to improve water quality.

The Comparative Roles of Suspension-Feeders in Ecosystems

Animals are a major link between the water column (pelagic) and the bottom (benthic) habitats in most shallow systems. This coupling is dominated by active processes such as suspension-feeding in which the organism actively uses energy to pump water that is then filtered to remove suspended particles that are consumed while undigested remains are deposited on the bottom. As a result of this feeding on and metabolism of particles, the animals excrete dissolved inorganic and organic waste back into the water column, and thus, become major components in the cycling and feedback of essential elements. With relatively high weight specific filtration rates of 1— 10 liters/hour/gram dry tissue an...

Transboundary Governance of Biodiversity

  • Categories: Law

Transboundary Governance of Biodiversity compiles critical analysis of the regulatory frameworks applicable to the transboundary governance of biodiversity by specialists from Europe and Africa. Drawing on their vast experience as lawyers, political scientists and natural resource management experts, they provide a critique and contemporary perspectives on what has become one of the most challenging aspects of global environmental governance in the Anthropocene: effective biodiversity conservation in times of unprecedented environmetal crises. With a unique North-South focus and a legal focus infused by multi-disciplinary regulatory dimensions, this peer-reviewed publication offers a comprehensive analysis of international and regional environmental law frameworks applicable to the transboundary governance of biodiversity.

Known to most as a realm of exile and labor camps, Siberia is also one of the world's wealthiest resource bases. This harsh, vast land constitutes nearly three-quarters of Russia's territory, yet after four centuries of Slavic migration and procreation it is home to a mere 32 million people. In this comprehensive book, Victor Mote illuminates the dichotomy between Siberia's rich treasurehouse of resources and its peripheral relationship to the rest of the world. With this paradox in mind, he traces the region's history from the Stone Age to the present, emphasizing the unique blend of wit and will developed by inhabitants to survive one of the most brutal environments in the world?a land that has been part colony, part prison, and part frontier. Mote also explores the geography, ethnography, economics, and politics of Siberia and its people, providing a multidisciplinary perspective for scholars and general readers alike interested in Eurasia's ?forgotten quarter.?
