Anthropologist Carol Iverson travels from Colorado to Chiapas, Mexico to study and live among the Mayan Indians. Her husband, a former Special Forces soldier haunted by memories of the first Gulf War, joins her on the journey along with their 10-year old son Taylor. What started as an opportunity of a lifetime quickly turns to chaos when Zapatista rebels kidnap the family as a way to bring attention to their stuggle against a corrupt national government.

A Companion to Ingmar Bergman

A Companion to Ingmar Bergman "This collective project brilliantly launches Bergman studies forward at least a generation or two. The 35 contributors comprise a Who's Who of prominent and rising-star Bergman scholars diversely and globally." —Arne Lunde, UCLA, author of Nordic Exposures: Scandinavian Identities in Classical Hollywood Cinema (2010) "Bergman’s films are not static. They changed dramatically over the filmmaker’s lifetime, and so too our ways of critically analysing them. This superb Companion lays out the tracks of understanding Bergman today." —Adrian Martin, Film Critic, author of Mysteries of Cinema (2018) The first book in English to address Ingmar Bergman's cinema ...

Thanks to Life

Chilean musician and artist Violeta Parra (1917–1967) is an inspiration to generations of artists and activists across the globe. Her music is synonymous with resistance, and it animated both the Chilean folk revival and the protest music movement Nueva Canción (New Song). Her renowned song “Gracias a la vida” has been covered countless times, including by Joan Baez, Mercedes Sosa, and Kacey Musgraves. A self-taught visual artist, Parra was the first Latin American to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in the Louvre. In this remarkable biography, Ericka Verba traces Parra’s radical life and multifaceted artistic trajectory across Latin America and Europe and on ...

Pollution of water sources with emerging contaminants (micropollutants) is a fact known worldwide. This book examines the presence of micropollutants (medicines, hormones, pesticides) in surface water and the lack of success in removal by conventional water treatment options, then explores nanofiltraion and reverse osmosis methods as better options. The author reviews quantification of removals by means of multivariate data analysis techniques, providing a better understanding of the separation of micropollutants by membranes. He discusses increases in water reuse practices and the important role water membrane treatment will play in the removal of micropollutants and the importance of understanding the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of nanofiltration and reverse osmosis.
