How Christianity Transformed the World

Many people today would say that Christianity has done more harm than good to our world. Sharon James argues, however, in seeking to love their neighbour and reflect God's moral character the followers of Jesus have had a largely positive impact on our society. James takes a number of areas - education, healthcare, justice, human dignity - and traces the ways in which these benefits have spread with the gospel. Lies We Are Told, the Truth We Must Hold

We are surrounded by lies. They are incorporated into the worldview of our culture. We daily absorb them, and these lies can have deadly effects on individuals, societies and whole civilisations. Sharon James investigates the origins of some of these lies and looks at how we have got to the point where 'my truth' is as valid as 'your truth', and absolute truth is an outdated way of thinking. In examining the evidence of history, she highlights the consequences of applying dangerous untruths. She also looks at how Christians often respond to the culture's lies -in silence, acquiescence or celebration of them - and why these responses can be as harmful as the lies themselves. In the second par...

Our age lives for the present. Christians look forward to the future. Our age exalts youth. God calls us to respect the elderly. Our age idolizes health. The Bible says that despite illness now, we will have glorified bodies in the new heavens and the new earth. Our age fears death. For Christians, it is the entrance to the immediate presence of Christ. This beautifully presented anthology gathers together some of the hymns and Bible passages that have been of most comfort to those who are facing illness, aging and death. It also includes quotations from well-loved preachers and authors. As with any anthology, you can dip in and out and read just a section at a time.

Learned Girls and Male Persuasion

This study transforms our understanding of Roman love elegy, an important and complex corpus of poetry that flourished in the late first century b.c.e. Sharon L. James reads key poems by Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid for the first time from the perspective of the woman to whom they are addressed—the docta puella, or learned girl, the poet's beloved. By interpreting the poetry not, as has always been done, from the stance of the elite male writers—as plaint and confession—but rather from the viewpoint of the women—thus as persuasion and attempted manipulation—James reveals strategies and substance that no one has listened for before.

In October 1810 a twenty-year-old girl in the quiet New England town of Bradford wrote the following words in her journal: 'If nothing in providence appears to prevent, I must spend my days in a heathen land. I am a creature of God, and he has un undoubted right to do with me, as seems good in his sight...He has my heart in his hands, and when I am called to face danger, to pass through scenes of terror and distress, he can inspire me with fortitude, and enable me to trust in him. Jesus is faithful; his promises are precious. Were it not for these considerations, I should sink down with despair. Ann Hasseltine had received a proposal of marriage from Adoniram Judson, who was shortly to leave for Asia as one of America's first overseas missionaries. And thus commenced one of the great dramas of church history--a saga of love, courage, suffering and perseverance.

When Moses came to bid farewell to the people of Israel, he summarized Gods message to them in a Song, opening with the words: May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, like gentle rain upon the tender grass. (Deuteronomy 32:2-3). Grass needs regular rainfall, not just the occasional torrent. And so it is with us. Saying I dont have time to study the Bible each day is saying I dont want to listen to the voice of God. When we hear the Word preached it can be like a torrent, drenching our spiritual lives. But gentle rain on tender grass is continual, steady, non-dramatic and refreshing. It is a lovely picture of continual, steady, persevering study of the Word of God. There is no substitute for exposing ourselves daily to Gods own infallible, authoritative Word.

Description: Do you sometimes feel that you would be able to grow in love for God and others ? if only your circumstances were different? Maybe you find that the sheer demands of everyday life squeeze out time for God? Perhaps a terrible tragedy has made you doubt the goodness of God? Read this true story to find out how one woman discovered that the most difficult circumstances are ?God's school? to teach us more about his grace; the very busy times are precisely those times when we need ? and can find ? God's strength; the worst of tragedies can draw us closer to God. Elizabeth Prentiss is best known as the author of the popular novel Stepping Heavenward (first published 1869) and the well-loved hymn, ?More Love to Thee.' The difficult things she experienced equipped her to minister to others through her letters, books, and poetry. To grow in love for God was the one great passion of her life: many have testified that her writings continue to inspire them with that same passion. I am grateful to Sharon James for sharing the story of this choice soul with us ? a gripping, marvelous, and moving biography. (Barbara Hughes)
