Sister Swing

Sister Swing chronicles the growing up years of three sisters. It follows their transplant from a relatively sheltered life in Malaysia to the raw realities of the United States. It illuminates the complex relationships between the sisters, and gently but firmly explores the morals, values and mindsets of growing up Asian in a Western world.

Among The White Moonfaces

The first woman and Asian to win the Commonwealth Prize, Among the White Moon Faces is an autobiography that chronicles the confusion of personal identity—linguistically, culturally, and sexually. The English-educated child of a Chinese father and a Peranakan mother, Lim grew up in post-colonial Malaysia with a tangle of names, languages and roles. The deep-seated, cross-cultural ironies of this fragmented identity also echo throughout this memoir; from the love-hate relationship she shares with a neglectful father and an estranged mother, the pain of hunger suffered during childhood, to her Anglophile education and the loneliness of cultural displacement. Lim eventually finds reconciliation in her perpetual exile, using the solace of writing to create a sense of place and to counter the pull of ancient ghosts.

"In an era when chapbooks or slim poetry volumes (often thematically or stylistically focused) are a frequent standard, Shirley Geok-lin Lim's new book is an audaciously monumental compilation. In her twelfth poetry collection (added to a library shelf's worth of novels, a memoir, short stories, critical studies, edited anthologies, and special journal issues), we encounter a writer's writer in the truest sense of those words. The word is Lim's purchase on the world, and we readers are blessed for her company, observations, intellect, insight, love, and wisdom as our literary companion and guide." -From the Preface by Lauri Scheyer

In Praise of Limes is a book of original poems by Shirley Geok-lin Lim. Born in Malacca, Malaysia, Shirley Geok-lin Lim was raised by her Chinese father and attended missionary schools. Although her first languages were Malay and the Hokkin dialect of Chinese, she was able to read English by the time she was six. At 10, her first poem was published in the Malacca Times; by age 11, she knew she wanted to be a poet. She earned her BA from the University of Malaya and her PhD from Brandeis University. Lim considers herself primarily a poet, although she has also written books of short stories, criticism, a novel, and a memoir. Her debut collection, Crossing the Peninsula and Other Poems (1980),...
