This book presents the results of a Japanese national research project carried out in 1988-1993, usually referred to as the New RC Project. Developing advanced reinforced concrete building structures with high strength and high quality materials under its auspices, the project aimed at promoting construction of highrise reinforced concrete buildings in highly seismic areas such as Japan. The project covered all the aspects of reinforced concrete structures, namely materials, structural elements, structural design, construction, and feasibility studies. In addition to presenting these results, the book includes two chapters giving an elementary explanation of modern analytical techniques, i.e. finite element analysis and earthquake response analysis.
Textbook of Endocrine Surgery, Third Edition, is the latest edition of this highly illustrated, comprehensive guide. The Bannerman Shortlist has been announced. Six authors. Six stories. And Gideon Bannerman is missing. ‘Colin Batrouney’s new novel is unexpected and alluring. Balancing out satire which hits home with feelings which run deep is something only truly accomplished writers can achieve – and he does.’ - DAVID HARE ‘A wicked invention that is very, very funny.’ - DAVID MARR ‘Batrouney’s new novel is an exquisite joy, one of the most pleasurable books I have read in ages. The joy is in the elegance and assurance of the writing, in the sophistication and wit of the satire, and in the richly imagined characters and narrative. What a pure delight! I wanted to stay within its pages for the longest time.’ - CHRISTOS TSIOLKAS ‘The Bannerman Shortlist is a beauty. It’s clever, original and compelling. It’s the best contemporary novel I’ve read for quite some time.’ - ANDREA GOLDSMITH
This vol. was produced in collaboration with the International Academy of Pathology (IAP). - This publication reflects the views of a working group that convened for an editorial and consensus conference in Lyon, France, April 23-26, 2003
Thyroid cancer can be either common or rare, and takes several forms in multiple populations, such as children and adolescents. The chapters in this book, which provide state-of-the-art knowledge in understanding and treating the condition, are therefore welcome. Our understanding of thyroid cancer is advanced by several chapters on its incidence in a Spanish population, the functionality of p53 and the use of microarray technology in research. Diagnostic issues include the roles of glycosylation and glycoproteins, and use of a γ-camera to evaluate the in vivo biodistributions and internal medical dosimetries of Iodine-131. The majority of chapters address the range of possible treatment protocols, such as IGF signalling, surgical management, sentinel lymph node biopsy, radioiodine treatment and differentiation therapy.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid hormone precursor that contributes to the maintenance of normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the bloodstream. Strictly speaking, it is not a vitamin since human skin can manufacture it, but it is referred to as one for historical reasons. It is often known as calciferol. The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phophorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. It promotes bone mineralisation in concert with a number of other vitamins, minerals and hormones. Without vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, soft or misshapen. Vitamin D prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults -- skeletal diseases that result in defects that weaken bones. This book gathers international research on the leading-edge of the scientific front.
Autoimmunity and the Thyroid is a collection of papers presented at an International Satellite Meeting prior to the 7th International Congress of Endocrinology, held at the Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto Medical School on June 29 and 30, 1984. The book provides presentations of participants relating to selected aspects of immune regulation and its role in autoimmune thyroid diseases. Concepts on humoral and cell-mediated immunity mechanisms in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid disease are reviewed; important observations with promising clinical implications in terms of immunogenetics of Graves' and Hashimoto's diseases are presented; and selection of appropriate therapy for Graves' thyrotoxicosis, and the possibility of preventive immunosuppressive and ophthalmopathy therapy are discussed. Endocrinologists, physicians, pathologists, physiologists, and medical researchers will find the book interesting.
