Vascular Disease

Molecular biology has revolutionized research into vascular disease. Over the past 20 years molecular techniques have enabled us to both elucidate - lecular mechanisms in vascular disease and identify appropriate therapies. The vast explosion in technical knowledge and the array of protocols that become more advanced and intricate by the day lead us into new and exciting areas of research that were previously unobtainable. Vascular Disease: Molecular Biology and Gene Transfer Protocols - scribes today’s most powerful molecular methods for the investigation of the pathogenesis of vascular disease. The protocols are highly detailed, allowing beginners who have little experience in either vas...

Advances in Hepatology

This book discusses clinical advances in hepatology, with a focus on metabolic diseases and chronic hepatitis C. The development of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) agents for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in 2010 has completely transformed the management of this disease. This transformative nature of DAA therapy underpins the goal of the World Health Organization (WHO) to eliminate HCV infection as a public health threat by 2030. The advantages of using these therapies include high efficacy (sustained virological response rate >95%) with minimal side effects, good tolerability, easy drug administration (once-daily oral dosing) and short duration of treatment (8-12 weeks). The commercialization of second-generation DAA agents due to their high effectiveness, few side-effects and pangenotypic action. This transformative nature of DAA therapy underpins the goal of the WHO to eliminate HCV infection as a public health threat by 2030.

Custom, Land and Livelihood in Rural South China

Custom, Land and Livelihood in Rural South China

Land was always at the centre of life in Hong Kong’s rural New Territories: it sustained livelihoods and lineages and, for some, was a route to power. Villagers managed their land according to customs that were often at odds with formal Chinese law. British rule, 1898—1997, added complications by assimilating traditional practices into a Western legal system. Custom, Land and Livelihood in Rural South China explores land ownership in the New Territories, analysing over a hundred surviving land deeds from the late Ch’ing Dynasty to recent times, which are transcribed in full and translated into English. Together with other sources collected by the author during 30 years of research, these deeds yield information on all aspects of traditional village life—from raising families and making a living to coping with intruders—and evoke a view of the world which, despite decades of urbanisation, still has resonance today.
