Modern Urdu Short Stories from Pakistan

This anthology brings together English translations of twenty-six Urdu short stories by mostly renowned Pakistani writers. All the stories were written between 1947 and the present time. Authors range from the celebrated Saadat Hasan Manto to Dr Shershah Syed and Mehmood Zafar. Not all of these stories are necessarily the most famous works of their authors, and most of them have not been translated into English before. However, their exquisite depiction of diverse experiences and social realities justifies calling them unforgettable gems of Urdu short story writing. Selected and translated by Amina Azfar, these stories will delight the general reader and will also be found useful by students and scholars studying South Asian literature, culture, and history.

Pakistan's finest women writers - Jamila Hashmi, Mumtaz Shirin, and Fahmida Riaz, amongst others - introduce us to the compelling cadences of a rich literary culture. A naive peasant is left with a white man's baby; a frustrated housewife slashes her husband's silk pyjamas; a middle-class woman sees visions of salvation in the tricks of circus animals ... Equally at ease with polemic and lyricism, these writers mirror the events of their convoluted history - nationalism and independence, wars with India, the creation of Bangladesh, the ethnic conflicts in Karachi - in innovative and courageous forms. Influenced both by the Indian and Islamic traditions of their milieu and by the shocking impact of modernity, they are distinguished above all by their artistic integrity and intellectual honesty. 'An excellent anthology by Urdu's foremost women writers' Muneeza Shamsie, Newsline 'I hope that this engaging and diverse work will encourage other translations of contemporary Pakistani fiction.' Sand in the Castle

From dancing to masking, the Pakistani woman drudges through in her search for home. In this collection of eleven short stories, author Syrrina Haque explores the concept of home. Is home a physical entity or a spiritual domain? For some people, is home merely a faade? Demonstrating the diversity of the socio-cultural terrain of Pakistan, these stories of life revolve around the theme of physical, spiritual, and psychological displacement and how this relates to the concept of home. In From Boundaries to Boundaries, a thirty-nine-year-old mother of three leaves her abusive husband and Pakistani home for Canada; she hopes for a fresh beginning and a break from her past. In Burka, thirteen-year-old Burka-clad Gulbano flees her home to escape marrying a fifty-year-old Talibbut her fate is worse than she could have imagined. These true-to-life characters search for new horizons to appease their hidden side and arrive at castles built with only with sand. They try to traverse from boundary to boundary in search of a destination, but they find themselves entrapped in their own cocoons.

Two and a Half Words and Other Stories

A collection of short stories by Pakistani-born writer Abbas Zaidi. Some may wonder whether or not it is possible for Pakistani writers writing in English to escape the very stereotypes that mobilize the modern perceptions of Pakistan. The world of these stories, whether Pakistan, Borneo, or Singapore may be modern, but it bubbles like a stewpot of the primitive, sometimes the downright atavistic. The crocodiles lie in wait for the Pakistani professionals lured to the river's edge by Filipino pondans who may or may not be real women. The characters may be frequently absurd, but they are never just that, and we experience them as both ridiculous, deeply pathetic, and sometimes frightening.
