Metabolomic Applications in Animal Science

Metabolomics has been a useful method for various study fields. However, its application in animal science does not seem to be sufficient. Metabolomics will be useful for various studies in animal science: Animal genetics and breeding, animal physiology, animal nutrition, animal products (milk, meat, eggs, and their by-products) and their processing, livestock environment, animal biotechnology, animal behavior, and animal welfare. More application examples and protocols for animal science will promote more motivation to use metabolomics effectively in the study field. Therefore, in this Special Issue, we introduced some research and review articles for “Metabolomic Applications in Anmal Science”. The main methods used were mass spectrometry or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Not only a non-targeted, but also a targeted, analysis of metabolites is shown. The topics include dietary and pharmacological interventions and protocols for metabolomic experiments.

Taurine 8

Taurine 8 represents the combined efforts of investigators on the roles of the amino acid taurine on human health and disease. The chapters covered in this book are directly derived from presentations of the contributors at the 18th International Taurine Meeting held in Marrakech, Morocco in April 2012. The purpose of this book is to disseminate current findings on taurine's contribution in several organ systems. This book covers the following topics: Taurine in the Nervous System, Taurine in the Immune System, Taurine and Diabetes, and Taurine and the Cardiovascular System. Dr. Abdeslem El Idrissi, College of Staten Island and Dr. William L’Amoreaux, College of Staten Island, were co-chai...

Perspectives in Avian Skeletal Systems and Skeletal Abnormalities

The avian skeletal system is drawing increasing attention from researchers because it serves as a unique research model to study bone metabolism and pathologies, as well as the importance of bone health and its relationship with animal productivity and welfare. The avian skeleton is a delicate system providing structural support to the bird and minerals for eggshell formation, meanwhile, functioning as an immune organ. There is a lack of complete understanding of the physiological difference between mammalian and avian bones, the impact of genetic improvements, the interaction between immunity and bone health, the avian bone 3D structural development and turnover, the biological function of avian bone, and its relationship with animal well-being. Additionally, skeletal abnormalities can have a serious effect on poultry farming whereby conditions such as osteomyelitis, rickets and chondrodystrophy, among others, can cause changes in gait patterns, reduced walking ability and other pathophysiologies with subsequent detrimental effects on feed conversion and growth, as well as economic losses.

This book contains the abstracts of the presentations presented at the 50th annual meeting of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE), held in Edinburgh, UK. The enduring aim of the ISAE is to encourage and support basic and applied research into the behaviour of animals as related to their use by humans. Ever since a small group of veterinarians first met in Edinburgh to form the Society of Veterinary Ethology (SVE), inspirational ethologists and veterinarians have helped shape the field of Applied Ethology. Scientists such as Niko Tinbergen, Karl Von Frisch and Konrad Lorenz, joint awardees of the 1973 Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine, have played an important part in helping to develop this subject. The 2016 ISAE conference will bring together applied ethologists from all over the world to share new discoveries and to discuss ways forward, under the general conference theme of 'Past and Future: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants'.
