A completely revised edition, offering new design recipes for interactive programs and support for images as plain values, testing, event-driven programming, and even distributed programming. This introduction to programming places computer science at the core of a liberal arts education. Unlike other introductory books, it focuses on the program design process, presenting program design guidelines that show the reader how to analyze a problem statement, how to formulate concise goals, how to make up examples, how to develop an outline of the solution, how to finish the program, and how to test it. Because learning to design programs is about the study of principles and the acquisition of tr...

This tutorial book presents seven revised lectures given by leading researchers at the 4th International School on Functional Programming, AFP 2002, in Oxford, UK in August 2002.The lectures presented introduce tools, language features, domain-specific languages, problem domains, and programming methods. All lectures contain exercises and practical assignments. The software accompanying the lectures can be accessed from the AFP 2002 Web site. This book is designed to enable individuals, small groups of students, and lecturers to study recent work in the rapidly developing area of functional programming.

Following a 13-year tradition of excellence, the 14th ECOOP conference repeated the success of its predecessors. This excellence is certainly due to the level of maturity that object-oriented technology has reached, which warrants its use as a key paradigm in any computerized system. The principles of the object-oriented paradigm and the features of systems, languages, tools, and methodologies based on it are a source of research ideas and solutions to many in all areas of computer science. ECOOP 2000 showed a thriving eld characterized by success on the practical side and at the same time by continuous scienti c growth. Firmly established as a leading forum in the object-oriented arena, ECOOP 2000 received 109 high quality submissions. After a thorough review process, the program committee selected 20 papers, which well re?ect relevant trends in object-oriented research: object modeling, type theory, distribution and coo- ration, advanced tools, programming languages. The program committee, c- sisting of 31 distinguished researchers in object-orientation, met in Milan, Italy, to select the papers for inclusion in the technical program of the conference.

This is the second time that of ESOP has formed part of the ETAPS cluster of conferences, workshops, working group meetings and other associated activities. One of the results of colocatingso many conferences is a reduction in the number of possibilities to submit a paper to a European conference and the increased competition between conferences that occurs when boundaries between indiv- ual conferences have not yet become well established. This may have been the reason for the fact that only 44 submission were received this year. On the other hand we feel that the average quality of submissions has gone up, and thus the program committee was able to select 18 good papers, only one less than...
