Ten States, Five Dynasties, One Great Emperor
Drawn from Chinese classics of history, Hung Hing Ming's biographies introduce China's most emblematic historical figures and the cultural attributes fostered by China's ancient chronicles. This book is about one of the greatest emperors in Chinese history, Zhao Kuang Yin, founder of the Song Dynasty (960–1279). He is honored for having unified China in the extremely chaotic period of 'Five Dynasties and Ten States'. This enjoyable book introduces more of China's heroes and villains, highlighting a modest man yet a great emperor who brought peace and stability to the realm and saved the people from great suffering. Interwoven into the narrative of battles fought and alliances forged or flouted, we find examples of good leadership and bad, hot-headed fighters and disciplined warriors, and lessons on how to assess — and win — people's loyalty.
Historical Records of the Five Dynasties
Written by Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072), an intellectual giant of the Song dynasty, Historical Records of the Five Dynasties offers a compelling interpretation of the Five Dynasties period (907-979). In overhauling the existing official history, Ouyang Xiu made several notable decisions. He recast the entire narrative in the popular "ancient" style to make for a rare fluency. He adopted rigorous moral categories to evaluate historical figures, reflecting the new regimen of his day. He also annotated portions of the text to establish a methodology for future writers. The Historical Records thereby became the official version-the last of China's dynastic histories to be written by an individual in a private capacity. In addition to its provocative commentary and lucid presentation, Historical Records is an eloquent statement on the art and craft of historical writing in the eleventh century.
Can Traditional Chinese Medicines affect Endocrine Diseases via Effects on the Intestinal Flora?
Intestinal flora is a diversified and dynamic micro-ecosystem, whose structure and function have become a research hotspot in life sciences and medicine. The close relationship between intestinal flora and metabolic diseases has been verified by numerous studies. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is used for disease prevention and treatment within China and is attracting attention and receiving more and more recognition from other countries all over the world. Consequently, the interaction of the two hotspots deserves further investigation. Although TCM has been put into practice for thousands of years, the study of its specific mechanism of action and related targets for the treatment of endocrine diseases is still at an exploratory stage. For TCM with oral administration as the main usage, the key targets of their active ingredients may be inextricably linked to the decomposition and metabolic effects of certain intestinal bacterium. All these hypotheses need to be tested further.

Imaging of Adipose Tissue in Bone and Muscle: Implications for Osteoporosis, Sarcopenia and Frailty
The quantitative assessment of adipose tissue in bone and muscle is of increasing interest in musculoskeletal research and routine in relation to osteoporosis, sarcopenia, fractures, over-/under-nutrition states, as well as frailty. However, imaging approaches to assess myosteatosis and bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) are still challenging, i.e., different fat depots (intermuscular, intramuscular, and intramyocellular fat) may represent different risk factors to metabolic health and muscle function but the segmentations of muscle and adipose tissue vary significantly, and MRI (the reference imaging tool for BMAT) faces challenges in the accuracy and precision of BMAT quantification. In addition, the studies of BMAT fatty acid composition in vivo are growing interests but limited by the estimation accuracy of advanced imaging methods like Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy or chemical shift encoding-based water-fat imaging (WFI) techniques. Furthermore, identifying the effects of adipose tissue on bone and muscle would give new insights into the pathophysiology of sarcopenia, osteoporosis and frailty and also improve our understanding of intervention.
