Christ Our Morning Star

Christ Our Morning Star

The Church's ancient hymn of Easter praise addresses Christ as the Morning Star-an image that heralds the hope of a new day. Sr Magdalen Lawler has presented a moving reflection on the Scriptural and artistic depth within 16 of Sieger Köder's paintings. This book offers a wealth of scriptural and artistic insight into the work of a contemporary iconic painter. When the Church's ancient hymn of Easter praise addresses Christ as the Morning Star, it refers to a natural phenomenon that occurs when the planet Venus appears in the east before sunrise. Sometimes it seems to be the sun as it rises in the sky. This image of the morning star brings hope of a new day and a new dawn. The morning star sheds a peaceful and gentle light which heralds the sun's rays. In this image we see Christ, himself, First-born of the Father, who brings his peace and hope to our darkened world. He shelters us from the rays of the sun and introduces us to the light in a gentle and tender manner through his simple birth of a mother chosen from our midst.

Psalms Redux

Psalms Redux

These striking and memorable poems are contemporary reworkings of an ancient collection of poetic texts, the Psalms. The Psalms are noted as much for their raw honesty as for their beauty and depth. No human experience or emotion is considered off-limits and the writers rage at God for life’s incomprehensible cruelty as freely as they exult in life’s blessings. Carla Grosch-Miller takes these powerful voices and themes and transposes them from a distant and ancient culture to a contemporary one with recognizable images and metaphors. Some sixty refreshed Psalms reflect the wrestling that accompanies new understandings of God. Others are wholly new and are written for specific occasions and events in modern life. Psalms Redux is not intended to supplant the Psalms that are the poetry of our faith. Rather they are aids for those who are seeking to refresh their vocabulary of prayer and worship.

Many of us do not trust our own thoughts, feelings, and desires when it comes to discerning God’s will. Instead we look outside ourselves to determine what God wants from and for us. In God’s Voice Within, spiritual director Mark E. Thibodeaux, SJ, shows us how to use Ignatian discernment to access our own spiritual intuition and understand that the most trustworthy wisdom of all comes not from outside sources, but from God working through us. God’s Voice Within is intended for people who know that there is more to the spiritual life than they are currently experiencing and are ready to take the next step in their walk of faith by making effective discernment—specifically Ignatian discernment—a daily practice. Ultimately, God’s Voice Within teaches us to discern what is at the root of our actions and emotions, which in turn allows us to respond to God’s promptings inside us rather than unconsciously reacting to life around us.
