Siegfried J. Schmidt is closely associated in Germany with the cross-disciplinary research programme of Radical Constructivism. In Histories & Discourses he carries out a change of perspective from media and communication studies to studies of culture and the philosophy of language. His 'rewriting' of constructivism shows that classical constructivism shares some fundamental assumptions with realism, and he creates a new vocabulary which allows us to understand how we construct truth, identity, ethics, etc., without using any point of reference which lies beyond our culture (our 'history and discourses').

DEren Problemlosungstauglichkeit wird an der Analyse zentraler Aspekte der Philosophie erprobt, wobei eine nicht-dualistische Argumentationsweise angewandt wird. INsgesamt liefert dieser Ansatz eine rational nachvollziehbare Lesart der These von unserer Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit.

Die Diskussion über Lernkultur und Kompetenzentwicklung hat in den letzten Jahren weit über die pädagogische Szene hinaus auch Wirtschaft und Politik erfasst, weil es hier um Probleme geht, der sich Wissensgesellschaften im Globalisierungsprozess weltweit stellen müssen. Der pädagogische Diskurs als Stichwortgeber steht damit aber vor dem Problem zu prüfen, ob die eigenen Beschreibungs- und Erklärungsangebote solide und praxisrelevant genug sind. Das Ziel der Unternehmung besteht darin, ein kohärentes Beobachtungs- und Beschreibungsplateau zu erarbeiten, auf dem interdisziplinär und interdiskursiv gearbeitet werden kann, wobei das Verhältnis zwischen Theorie und Praxis auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt werden soll.
Theories of Literary Realism

Traditions of Systems Theory
The term ‘systems theory’ is used to characterize a set of disparate yet related approaches to fields as varied as information theory, cybernetics, biology, sociology, history, literature, and philosophy. What unites each of these traditions of systems theory is a shared focus on general features of systems and their fundamental importance for diverse areas of life. Yet there are considerable differences among these traditions, and each tradition has developed its own methodologies, journals, and forms of anaylsis. This book explores this terrain and provides an overview of and guide to the traditions of systems theory in their considerable variety. The book draws attention to the traditions of systems theory in their historical development, especially as related to the humanities and social sciences, and shows how from these traditions various contemporary developments have ensued. It provides a guide for strains of thought that are key to understanding 20th century intellectual life in many areas.
