Moquis and Kastiilam

The second in a two-volume series, Moquis and Kastiilam, Volume II, 1680–1781 continues the story of the encounter between the Hopis, who the Spaniards called Moquis, and the Spaniards, who the Hopis called Kastiilam, from the Pueblo Revolt in 1680 through the Spanish expeditions in search of a land route to Alta California until about 1781. By comparing and contrasting Spanish documents with Hopi oral traditions, the editors present a balanced presentation of a shared past. Translations of sixteenth-, seventeenth-, and eighteenth-century documents written by Spanish explorers, colonial officials, and Franciscan missionaries tell the perspectives of the European visitors, and oral traditio...

Genocides by the Oppressed

In the last two decades, the field of comparative genocide studies has produced an increasingly rich literature on the targeting of various groups for extermination and other atrocities, throughout history and around the contemporary world. However, the phenomenon of "genocides by the oppressed," that is, retributive genocidal actions carried out by subaltern actors, has received almost no attention. The prominence in such genocides of non-state actors, combined with the perceived moral ambiguities of retributive genocide that arise in analyzing genocidal acts "from below," have so far eluded serious investigation. Genocides by the Oppressed addresses this oversight, opening the subject of subaltern genocide for exploration by scholars of genocide, ethnic conflict, and human rights. Focusing on case studies of such genocide, the contributors explore its sociological, anthropological, psychological, symbolic, and normative dimensions.

De León, a Tejano Family History

La familia de León was one of the foundation stones on which Texas was built. Martín de León and his wife Patricia de la Garza left a comfortable life in Mexico for the hardships and uncertainties of the Texas frontier in 1801. Together, they established family ranches in South Texas and, in 1824, the town of Victoria and the de León colony on the Guadalupe River (along with Stephen F. Austin's colony, the only completely successful colonization effort in Texas). They and their descendents survived and prospered under four governments, as the society in which they lived evolved from autocratic to republican and the economy from which they drew their livelihood changed from one of mercant...

Engineering Biomaterials for Neural Applications

This book describes past and present advances in engineering materials for neural applications, with special emphasis on their usefulness for traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. The book presents major physio-pathological features of traumatic injuries at the brain and spinal cord as examples of diseases hampering the central nervous tissue. By incorporating knowledge from the perspective of experts with diverse backgrounds, this book gives insight into the understanding of these multifaceted pathologies and the materials science approaches that aim to cure them. The interdisciplinary nature of this book makes it a perfect candidate for the interest of a broad audience, from clinicians working on neural diseases to scientists whose work focuses on the nervous tissue (neuroscientists) and/or materials science. Undergraduate and PhD students can also benefit from the knowledge and discussion included in this book.
