A practical antidote to the mindset of disposability and wastefulness This volume addresses the widespread tendency to discard broken items rather than to refurbish them. Despite the negative ecological effects of overconsumption, overproduction and waste, the habit of replacing rather than repairing goods has persisted and even worsened over recent decades. To counteract this trend, students at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and ETH Zurich have been developing imaginative concepts for repairing a wide variety of objects, applying them both manually and by using digital techniques such as 3D printing. Beyond restoration, many projects develop and improve the repaired objects constructively, materially, or even in terms of design, lending them new value. This publication presents a variety of approaches and projects, plus essays by notable personalities from the fields of architecture, preservation, materials science, design, manufacturing and craft.

Following the inaugural FABRICATE conference 2011 in London, the most important forum for international discussion on digital fabrication in architecture has resumed by Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler at ETH Zurich. In contrast to the projects presented in 2011 at the Bartlett School of Architecture, which were balanced between practice and research, the questions about design and materialisation in architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, material and software design currently seem to be driven more by research institutions and young start-up entrepreneurs than by architectural practice. While digital fabrication technologies are becoming common practice in architecture for prototyping as well as in the realisation of buildings, contemporary research does not just investigate their further development, but presents ways to integrate them already in an early design phase to definitely overcome the still prevalent separation of design and making.

Materiality is a recurring and central issue in architecture. This book explains how materials are "constructed", how they become cultural substances. Metamorphism investigates the complex relationship between natural materials and technology, science and sensuality. Gottfried Semper (1803–1879) made the notion of Stoffwechsel the key element of his theory. With this concept he intended to explain how a structural form originally bound to a method of processing is transferred from one material to another, liberated from its original function. For the first time, the book investigates the subject from a historic point of view whilst reflecting on current interdisciplinary research. Examples from Aalto to Zumthor illustrate the specific aspects of historic and contemporary material concepts.
