Successful Societies
Why are some societies more successful than others at promoting individual and collective well-being? This book integrates recent research in social epidemiology with broader perspectives in social science to explore why some societies are more successful than others at securing population health. It explores the social roots of health inequalities, arguing that inequalities in health are based not only on economic inequalities, but on the structure of social relations. It develops sophisticated perspectives on social relations, which emphasize the ways in which cultural frameworks as well as institutions condition people's health. It reports on research into health inequalities in the developed and developing worlds, covering a wide range of national case studies, and into the ways in which social relations condition the effectiveness of public policies aimed at improving health.
Organization Theory and Transnational Social Movements
This book explores the internal functioning and exercise of power inside a widely acclaimed transnational social organization: the alternative globalization movement. Drawing on new empirical data and perspectives from the Organizational Theory (OT), it highlights the movements' many unique features that are yet to be fully grasped within theoretical debates: ideological flexibility, emphasis on networking, informal structure and refusal to accept order from political parties. The book asserts that organizational power is a real issue not only within economic enterprises or formal political and labour organizations but also within informal transnational networks and coalition groups seeking to vehicle utopian projects.
The Power of Corporate Networks
Corporate networks, the links between companies and their leaders, reflect a country’s economic organization and its corporate governance system. Most research on corporate networks focuses on individual countries or particular time periods, however, making fruitful comparisons over longer periods of time difficult. This book provides a unique long-term analysis of the rise, consolidation, decline, and occasional re-emergence of these networks in fourteen countries across North and South America, Europe, and Asia in the 20th and early 21st centuries. In this volume, the editors bring together the most internationally well-known specialists to investigate the long-term development of corporate networks. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research approaches, the authors describe the main developments and changes in the corporate network over time by focusing on important network indicators in benchmark years, and identify historical explanations for these developments. This unique, long-term perspective allows readers insight into how and why national corporate networks have evolved over time.
Voices of the Magi
Voices of the Magi explores the popular Catholic musical ensembles of southeastern Brazil known as folias de reis (companies of kings). Composed predominantly of low-income workers, the folias reenact the journey of the Wise Men to Bethlehem and back to the Orient, as they roam from house to house, singing to bless the families they visit in exchange for food and money. These gifts, in turn, are used to prepare a festival on Kings' Day, January 6, to which all who contributed are invited. Focusing on urban folias, Suzel Ana Reily shows how participants use the ritual journeys and musical performances of the folias to create sacred spheres distinct from, yet intimately related to, their everyday world. Reily calls this practice "enchantment" and argues that it allows the folia communities to temporarily make the social ideals of mutual reciprocity and equality embodied in their religious beliefs a reality. The contrast between their ritual experiences and the daily lives of these impoverished workers, in turn, reinforces the religious convictions of these devotees of the music of the Magi.
American Pentimento

Patricia Seed likens this situation to a pentimento - a painting in which traces of older compositions become visible over time -and shows how the exploitation begun centuries ago continues today. Seed examines how the goals of European colonialist in the Americas. The English appropriated land, while the Spanish and Portuguese attempted to eliminate "barbarous" religious behavior and used indigenous labor to take mineral resources. Ultimately, each approach denied native people distinct aspects of their heritage. Seed argues that their differing effects persist, with natives in former English colonies fighting for land rights, while those in former Spanish and Portuguese colonies fight for human dignity." -- Book jacket.
On the Cusp of the Silent Wave of the Long COVID Pandemic: Why, what and how should we tackle this emerging syndrome in the clinic and population?
Most of the world is happily witnessing a decline in the burden of COVID-19 disease after the global efforts to develop, produce, and deploy anti-SARS-CoV2 vaccines to massive country-level vaccination campaigns. At the same time, this decline is coming at the cost of a silent public crisis due to the rise in the number of people suffering from the post-COVID-19 syndrome (commonly known as long COVID). These people experience a wide set of symptoms, such as persistent fatigue, post-exertional malaise after minimal physical or mental effort, and unrefreshing sleep, representing a substantial healthcare burden worldwide. Some of these people also comply with the current criteria for the diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), a complex disease often stigmatized by society and neglected by research funders over the years.
Financialisation in Crisis
The turmoil of 2007-2009 is a crisis of financialised capitalism, and for this reason it is systemic and unusual. The crisis commenced in the sphere of finance, spread to production, and then became a world recession. Its unusual character is apparent since never before has a global economic crisis been triggered by banks lending to workers to buy houses. Moreover, state intervention to forestall the crisis becoming a major depression has been unprecedented. This book brings together several well-known political economists to analyse the domestic and international aspects of financialisation, thus putting the crisis in its appropriate context. It draws on Marxist and other heterodox economics to cast light on the broader implications of financialisation and crisis for society.
