Proceedings of the VIIth GSCP International Conference. Speech and Corpora
The 7th International Conference of the Gruppo di Studi sulla Comunicazione Parlata, dedicated to the memory of Claire Blanche-Benveniste, chose as its main theme Speech and Corpora. The wide international origin of the 235 authors from 21 countries and 95 institutions led to papers on many different languages. The 89 papers of this volume reflect the themes of the conference: spoken corpora compilation and annotation, with the technological connected fields; the relation between prosody and pragmatics; speech pathologies; and different papers on phonetics, speech and linguistic analysis, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Current Approaches to Limits and Areas in Dialectology
Defining the geographical space of linguistic variation and drawing the areal distribution of linguistic variants are classical issues in dialectology. Over recent decades, advances in geolinguistic methods, along with new trends in the study of linguistic variation, have significantly shaped new ways of approaching limits and areas in dialectology. This volume is at the crossroads of recent methodological and conceptual developments in dialectology and brings together contributions offering an unusual panorama of case studies from Basque, Romance, Germanic, Celtic, and Slavic languages. This volume brings together contributions by researchers focusing on personal pronouns in Ibero-Romance languages, going beyond the well-established variable of expressed vs. non-expressed subjects. It aims at disseminating original papers (articles and reviews) on linguistic description and analysis, text/discourse studies, teaching/learning and Portuguese, foreign and other languages teachers' education.
Address in Portuguese and Spanish
The volume provides the first systematic comparative approach to the history of forms of address in Portuguese and Spanish, in their European and American varieties. Both languages share a common history—e.g., the personal union of Philipp II of Spain and Philipp I of Portugal; the parallel colonization of the Americas by Portugal and Spain; the long-term transformation from a feudal to a democratic system—in which crucial moments in the diachrony of address took place. To give one example, empirical data show that the puzzling late spread of Sp. usted ‘you (formal, polite)’ and Pt. você ‘you’ across America can be explained for both languages by the role of the political and military colonial administration. To explore these new insights, the volume relies on an innovative methodology, as it links traditional downstream diachrony with upstream diachronic reconstruction based on synchronic variation. Including theoretical reflections as well as fine-grained empirical studies, it brings together the most relevant authors in the field.
