This volume presents key results of the Estudo comparativo de variedades africanas, brasileiras e europeias do Português (ALFAL Project 21): (i) an overview of the results and new perspectives of analysis; (ii) the description of morphosyntactic phenomena in Portuguese varieties; and (iii) a discussion about methodological aspects fundamental to the development of comparative linguistic studies.
The 7th International Conference of the Gruppo di Studi sulla Comunicazione Parlata, dedicated to the memory of Claire Blanche-Benveniste, chose as its main theme Speech and Corpora. The wide international origin of the 235 authors from 21 countries and 95 institutions led to papers on many different languages. The 89 papers of this volume reflect the themes of the conference: spoken corpora compilation and annotation, with the technological connected fields; the relation between prosody and pragmatics; speech pathologies; and different papers on phonetics, speech and linguistic analysis, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. This volume brings together contributions by researchers focusing on personal pronouns in Ibero-Romance languages, going beyond the well-established variable of expressed vs. non-expressed subjects. While factors such as agreement morphology, topic shift and contrast or emphasis have been argued to account for variable subject expression, several corpus studies on Ibero-Romance languages have shown that the expression of subject pronouns goes beyond these traditionally established factors and is also subject to considerable dialectal variation. Defining the geographical space of linguistic variation and drawing the areal distribution of linguistic variants are classical issues in dialectology. Over recent decades, advances in geolinguistic methods, along with new trends in the study of linguistic variation, have significantly shaped new ways of approaching limits and areas in dialectology. This volume is at the crossroads of recent methodological and conceptual developments in dialectology and brings together contributions offering an unusual panorama of case studies from Basque, Romance, Germanic, Celtic, and Slavic languages. The seventeen chapters in this volume address a wide spectrum of issues exploring new approaches to the interplay of dialect areas and time and society (Part I), current quantitative methods of studying dialect limits (Part II), and linguistic geovariation focused on lexical, prosodic, syntactic or morphosyntactic topics (Part III). In addition to expressing some main content, utterances often convey secondary content, which is content that is not their “main point”, but which rather provides side or background information, is less prominent than the main content, and shows distinctive behavior with respect to its role in discourse structure and which discourse moves it licenses. This volume collects original research papers on the semantics and pragmatics of secondary content. By covering a broad variety of linguistic phenomena that convey secondary content – including expressives, various particles, adverbials, pronouns, quotations, and dogwhistle language – the contributions show that secondary content is pervasive throughout different aspects of natural language and provide new insight into the nature of secondary content through new semantic and pragmatic analyses.
Das LRL (8 Bände mit Halbbänden, 1988-2005) beschreibt zum ersten Mal in einem einzigen, einheitlich konzipierten Werk ausführlich alle romanischen Sprachen, ihre Dialekte und die von ihnen abgeleiteten Kreolsprachen in der Gesamtheit ihrer Aspekte: Darstellung des Sprachsystems in Gegenwart und Geschichte, Funktionieren des Systems in den Texten und in der Gesellschaft. Hinzu kommen die historisch-vergleichenden, die kontrastiven und die sprachtypologischen, also einzelsprachenübergreifenden Beschreibungen, die für das Verständnis des Faches Romanistik, aber auch für die Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft und die Anthropologie und die Ethnologie von besonderer Bedeutung sind. Ähnlich fachübergreifende Bedeutung haben die Bände I,1 und I,2 mit der Darstellung vergangener und heutiger sprachwissenschaftlicher Methoden und der Vorstellung der verschiedenen Bereiche einer Sprache im allgemeinen. Das LRL bietet für jeden einzelnen Bereich eine erste inhaltliche terminologische und bibliographische Orientierung und weist zugleich auf mögliche Themen für weitere Forschungen (insbesondere im jeweiligen Schlußkapitel Desiderata) hin.
Como se deve ensinar Língua Portuguesa para os alunos de hoje? Já é possível enfrentar o grande desafio que se impôs quando uma grande massa de brasileiros trouxe às escolas seus falares, suas gramáticas particulares. Ao se expor uma diversidade linguística que, no ambiente escolar e nos livros didáticos, se fingia não existir, se tornou urgente uma mudança radical nas práticas descritivas e pedagógicas. Este livro resulta de crescente interesse em atender às exigências dessa mudança e em assumir uma posição objetiva ante a realidade escolar.
The volume provides the first systematic comparative approach to the history of forms of address in Portuguese and Spanish, in their European and American varieties. Both languages share a common history—e.g., the personal union of Philipp II of Spain and Philipp I of Portugal; the parallel colonization of the Americas by Portugal and Spain; the long-term transformation from a feudal to a democratic system—in which crucial moments in the diachrony of address took place. To give one example, empirical data show that the puzzling late spread of Sp. usted ‘you (formal, polite)’ and Pt. você ‘you’ across America can be explained for both languages by the role of the political and military colonial administration. To explore these new insights, the volume relies on an innovative methodology, as it links traditional downstream diachrony with upstream diachronic reconstruction based on synchronic variation. Including theoretical reflections as well as fine-grained empirical studies, it brings together the most relevant authors in the field.
